Definition: What is a valid cognition? If a valid cognition cannot, by its own power, lead to a definitive understanding of its object of measurement, then the self-experiencing self-awareness direct perception is not deceptive to itself or to its object of measurement, but it cannot lead to a definitive understanding by its own power, and must be led by the power of other characteristics. For example, the direct perception of pure apprehension, which apprehends the absence of a pot in a certain place, leads to a definitive understanding of the absence of a pot in that place by its own power. Similarly, the self-awareness direct perception that experiences it can, by its own power, lead to a definitive understanding that the direct perception of sense consciousness did not perceive a pot. As for the basis of examples, all inferences are only self-determining valid cognitions, because if the three aspects of the reason are complete but the probandum is not determined, it will not become an inference; and if it is determined, then it can lead to a definitive understanding of the probandum by its own power. Considering this, all three commentaries of Lha Shak Chöchok state that inference is only self-determining. Among the four types of direct perception, some say that yogic direct perception is a self-determining valid cognition, because it is said in the "Seeing of Great Intellect": "It ascertains all aspects." Therefore, this is not reasonable, because the "Great Intellect" here refers to the fact that there is no error in the meaning of direct perception, so it can lead to a definitive understanding by its own power, but it does not refer to yogic direct perception alone, because this is not the point of the context. Moreover, since there is no definitive knowledge in the minds of Buddhas and noble beings, it is impossible for the yogic direct perception in their minds to lead to definitive knowledge. Therefore, it is possible for yogic direct perception to be neither self-determining nor other-determining. The yogic direct perception of noble beings who have cut off conceptualization is only self-determining. Self-awareness direct perception is only self-determining, because it can lead to a definitive understanding of the main object of its engagement, which is consciousness, by its own power. It is not a self-determining valid cognition for all objects of engagement, because the self-awareness direct perception in the mind of a person whose mind is corrupted by the habitual tendencies of clinging to permanence cannot lead to a definitive understanding of the moment of consciousness by its own power. It is also not the case that self-determination pervades the terms of the object of engagement, because the self-awareness direct perception of the experience of inference in the mind of a materialist cannot lead to a definitive understanding of the terms of inference by its own power. Mental direct perception is not continuous, so immediately after it is definitive knowledge.

Because it cannot be led out, it is only the other-determined valid cognition. Self-awareness and mental direct perception are both established in terms of the valid cognition of conventional truth. Regarding sense direct perception, Chok-tsang considers that the direct perception of functional appearance is a habitual direct perception, and therefore self-determined. The entering direct perception, if there is no cause of error, is self-determined, and if there is, it is other-determined, and it is considered that there are three types of these. In the Treatise on the Treasury of Reasoning, the direct perception of functional appearance and the habitual direct perception are separated, and on the basis of these two self-determined and having causes of error, adding the first-time observer and the non-attentive observer, they are considered to be other-determined valid cognitions. Among them, the direct perception of functional appearance is like the sense direct perception of grasping fire, appearing as if the fire is performing the function of cooking and burning. The habitual one refers to the direct perception that has been accustomed to the object for a long time, thereby grasping subtle differences. The first-time observer refers to something that has never been seen before, newly seen, such as the direct perception of seeing a yak for the first time. The non-attentive one refers to the sense direct perception of grasping form when the mind is withdrawn inward. Having causes of error means that although it is actually produced from three causes, it cannot rely on its own power to lead out the determination due to the obstruction of some internal and external causes of error. Classifying this, there are three types: appearance determined by itself and truth determined by others, general characteristics determined by itself and specific characteristics determined by others, and the appearance itself also determined by others. If each of these is determined from four aspects, then the example of the first is: actually it is fire, but when the mind doubts whether it is fire or not, the sense direct perception of grasping the red flame from a distance. It is a valid cognition in the aspect that the red flame is the color of fire, because it is a non-conceptual, non-erroneous cognition. It is other-determined, because due to causes of error such as distant objects, illusory fire, and the light of jewels, it cannot rely on its own power to lead out the determination. The valid cognition of the determiner is the power of seeing it perform the function of cooking and burning after going to the fire, or the power of the direct perception being accustomed for a long time and grasping subtle differences, or the power of inference from seeing the sign of smoke arising and inferring that there is fire, or the fire's
