Since it is born from the sea, it is called "Sea-born." Among these, there are three cases: a lotus born from the sea has both speaking and application; a lotus born from dry land has application but no speaking; a frog born from the sea has speaking but no application. Then, why isn't the fourth case, like a tree stump born from dry land, which has neither speaking nor application, enumerated? There is no fault, because it does not depend on the name "Sea-born." Similarly, there are three cases for direct perception (pratyaksha) and one case for inference (anumaana). The Sanskrit word for direct perception is "prati aksha," where "prati" means each and "aksha" means sense organ. Therefore, because it relies on each sense organ, it is called direct perception. Among these, the first two direct perceptions have both speaking and application, while the latter two have application but no speaking. Erroneous sense consciousnesses have speaking but no application. The Sanskrit word for inference is "anumaana," where "anu" means later or after, and "maana" means to measure. Therefore, because it measures what is to be proven after establishing the property of the subject and determining the connection, inference is a case with both speaking and application. Second, refuting wrong conceptions about the definition is divided into two: refuting wrong conceptions about the definition of direct perception and refuting wrong conceptions about the definition of inference. The first is divided into two: refuting the conception of something that is not direct perception as direct perception, and refuting the conception of something that is direct perception as not direct perception. The first is divided into three: refuting the conception of confusion about the object, confusion about the time, and confusion about the aspect as direct perception. The first is: Some people think that the mind that apprehends the light of a jewel as a jewel is a valid direct perception of the jewel's own character. This is unreasonable, because the jewel's own character does not impart a similar aspect from its own side. Analyzing what kind of mind this is, how the commentaries explain it, analyzing the reasonable and unreasonable aspects separately, and identifying the key points, are divided into three. The first is divided into three: considering it as inference, considering it as direct perception, and considering it as wrong knowledge. The first is that Lha and Shakya consider that recognizing the presence of a jewel in that place from the sign of the light of the jewel is an inference, because Lha, in the first refutation syllogism, considers the jewel's

It is said, "One does not ascertain the light of a jewel with the thought of a jewel," and so on. The so-called "first formulation of refuting the Śās," that which is not valid cognition will not become an illusion, and so on. One does not ascertain the light of a jewel with the thought of a jewel, because even if it is an illusion, it is valid cognition because it does not deceive with respect to the actual jewel. Thus, because it does not deceive, it is valid cognition, which is said to be the general characteristic of valid cognition, and it also exists in the mind that apprehends the light of a jewel as a jewel. If it also relies on other related things that are hidden, then it will immediately be determined as inference. Here, how can the relation of the light of a jewel, from its very result, give rise to the illusion of a jewel in that light of a jewel? Therefore, it is said that it is inference arising from the sign of the result. Second, the Ornamenter, the master and disciples, consider it to be direct perception. In the Ornament it says, "Therefore, for the light of a jewel, the knowledge that knows it as a jewel, at that time is it direct perception, or is it definitely inference?" And it says, "That is direct valid cognition, how could it be such an illusion? If it does not deceive, it is valid cognition, where is the doubt between illusion and non-illusion?" Thus, he spoke of the acceptance of direct perception, including the dispelling of doubt. Both commentaries say, "At that time, is it direct perception?" This is one's own view. "Or is it definitely inference?" This is the view of Śākya-blo. Nyi-ma-sbas-pa also said, "Well then, what is the valid cognition that knows the light of a jewel as a jewel? That is direct valid cognition. If so, how could direct perception become an illusion? That is not true, whether it is an illusion or not, that which does not deceive is valid cognition." Third, Chos-mchog considers that the knowledge that apprehends the light of a jewel as a jewel and the knowledge that apprehends the light of a lamp as a jewel are the same as mistaken knowledge, and although they are the same in not accomplishing the object of entry, there is a difference in that they serve as the basis for other valid cognitions that accomplish the object of entry and do not serve as the basis. In the Tathāgata-utpāda-sūtra, it says that for the light of a jewel and the light of a lamp, those that are known as jewels, as mistaken knowledge, there is no difference in deception itself.
