If asked why, the first fault is not there, because, that inference of the reason that difference depends on the object, when self-cognizance direct perception has arisen on the inference, that inference is not established as self-cognizance direct perception depending on the object, because, at that time the inference is not established as the object of the inference. The second fault is also not there, if the particular is the same nature as the shapa (leaf), then it must be the same nature as just the tree, but, if the nature of shapa (leaf) is different, then it does not necessarily have to be different from the nature of just the tree. The fifth question is: Some of our own schools believe that valid cognition is definitely three types: direct perception, inference, and scriptural valid cognition. Master Chandrakirti added example-measuring valid cognition on top of that, making it four types. And some outsiders add meaning-implication and non-existent valid cognition on top of that, believing that there are many types of valid cognition. So what is the reason for definitely determining that there are only two types here, direct perception and inference? For this, there is a reason to establish that it is definitely two types and there is no harm, and for believing in other types, there is no reason to establish it and there is harm, there are four points. The first point is: In the sutra it says, "Direct perception and subsequent inference are the two characteristics of valid cognition that are measured." In this way, it only says that the reason for establishing that valid cognition is definitely two types is that the things to be measured are definitely two types. Similarly, here it says, "Because there are two things to be measured, there are two valid cognitions." In this way it is said. To establish this principle, there are two things: establishing the property of the subject and establishing pervasion. The first point is: The things to be measured are definitely two types: self-character and general-character. From the perspective of results, there are two qualities: the ability to perform a function and the inability to perform a function. From the perspective of one's own entity, there are two qualities: similar commonality and dissimilar non-commonality. From the perspective of the object-possessor sound, there are two types: the actual object to be expressed of the expressing sound and the non-object to be expressed. From the perspective of the object-possessor consciousness, there are definitely two types: the appearing object of conceptual thought and the appearing object of non-conceptual consciousness. The reason for being able to perform a function and not being able to perform a function, etc., shows this. So, what are the characteristics of the two types, self-character and general-character? What is the nature? What is the meaning of distinguishing them? These two truths are the characteristics, what is the ultimate truth that can perform a function, etc. The nature of the general characteristic does not exist in things, and what exists in things is the self-character.

"The object to be expressed is not the reality itself." etc. The division into self and common characteristics is based on the way of engaging with the unique self-characteristic, which is "The self-characteristic is the single object to be measured." etc. Secondly, establishing pervasion is that if the object to be measured is determined as two, then the valid cognition is pervaded by being determined as two. That is, when the object to be measured, the unique self-characteristic, is engaged by the two valid cognitions as the means of measurement, the object of engagement for both is only the self-characteristic. However, in the way of realizing that object of engagement, there are two ways: the way of realizing it directly and the way of realizing it indirectly. Among them, the mind that realizes it directly is direct perception, and its object of appearance is the self-characteristic; the mind that realizes it indirectly is inference, and its object of appearance is the common characteristic. That is, "From what thing's function." etc. Secondly, among the two, the absence of harm from a small number and the absence of harm from a large number, the first is that the Lokayata says: It is not reasonable to determine the number of valid cognitions as two, direct perception and inference, because valid cognition is determined to be only direct perception, because inference is not a valid cognition. Although the scriptures that refute that assertion are not explicitly stated here, the teacher intends that when refuting other numbers, it is necessary to refute both large and small numbers, so he supplements here by saying: "Because the non-existent is not the object to be measured, if you say it is one, I also accept it." etc. Secondly, here, the Vaisheshika and the Naiyayikas etc. say: It is not reasonable to determine the number of valid cognitions as two, because the mind that realizes that color is impermanent, although it is a valid cognition, is not included in the two, direct perception and inference. To refute that statement, it is said in that sutra: "Therefore, because it is extremely established, it is a valid cognition, the others are not existent.", and its meaning is also said here: "This fault does not become a fault." etc. The Samkhyas etc., who say that the mind of recognition is a third aggregate that is not included in the two valid cognitions, to refute that assertion, it is said in that sutra: "Repeatedly knowing is also not existent, it becomes exhausted like memory etc.", and its meaning is also said here: "Because each moment is different." etc. Secondly, on the basis that the establishment of other numbers has no proof and has harm, there are two: refuting other numbers in valid cognition and refuting valid cognition in other numbers. The first is that the Lokayata uses inference to
