I think so. Among these four ways, the first is unreasonable because that valid cognition becomes two different things to be interpreted, because that meaning is to be interpreted by two different counter-entities. If it is said that the correct thesis established for the sake of others also becomes two different things to be interpreted, because that meaning is to be interpreted by two different counter-entities, then the reason is not established, because in the Gate of Reasoning, the definition is shown in a simplified way by excluding dissimilar classes. In the Compendium, the definition is explained extensively by excluding wrong discriminations, it is only like this, the counter-entity of the meaning is actually one. For example, as a definition, direct perception is established as a non-deceptive consciousness by excluding dissimilar classes, and by excluding wrong discriminations, freedom from conceptuality is added to it, but the counter-entity of the meaning is one. If it is said that the non-deceptive consciousness and the clarity of unknown meaning are also one counter-entity of meaning, so there is no fault, then, then the clarity of unknown meaning becomes not another definition other than the non-deceptive consciousness, because it is not another counter-entity other than that. If you admit it, it contradicts "the other is the second definition." The previous explanation of the Ornament is also unreasonable, because when establishing the definition of the general valid cognition, it is irrelevant to divide it into two types, ultimate valid cognition and conventional valid cognition, to establish the definition, and otherwise, if asked what is the definition of the general valid cognition, the answer is to divide it into two types, direct perception and inference, and establishing the definition of those two also becomes the reason for establishing the definition of the general valid cognition. Furthermore, in this Commentary on Valid Cognition, it becomes a treatise that does not directly show the definition of the general valid cognition, because neither the previous nor the subsequent treatises have shown the definition of the general valid cognition. If it is said that the second explanation is the intention of that commentary as most Tibetans think, then it is unreasonable, because "clinging to the grasped is not conventional," and there is the fault of repeating the clarity of unknown meaning. However, the intention of that commentary, both the former and the latter are each complete definitions, because the counter-entity of those two meanings is one. Then, for the latter definition, what eliminates the fact that the interrupted consciousness becomes valid cognition? If it is said that it is eliminated by the previous reasoning, then it appears to be that meaning.

This is very reasonable, and it will be explained in the section on our own system below. However, the system of Dharmottara is also unreasonable. If the word used to establish the definition has the power to eliminate the non-pervasive, then it is meaningless to supplement the elimination of the non-pervasive from elsewhere. If it does not have this power, then the definition will be flawed. Dividing "understanding the meaning of truth" as the function of valid cognition rather than its definition is also not the intention of the scriptures. For when explaining the meaning of "non-deceptive," it is said, "That which is capable of performing a function (དོན་བྱེད་ནུས་པར་གནས་པ་ནི།)." And when explaining the meaning of "clarifying the meaning of what is not known," it is said, "What is the knowledge that does not know its own nature (རང་གི་མཚན་ཉིད་མི་ཤེས་པ། །ཤེས་པ་གང་ཡིན་)?" Therefore, it is said so. In the view of the Brahmins, there is no need for elimination because there is no determination when one has not previously realized it. If the way of grasping is not mistaken about the meaning, then it is pervasive because it does not involve the meaning that has already been realized. Eliminating imputation does not pervade direct perception, because if it is direct perception, it contradicts cutting off imputation. If the meaning of "understanding the meaning of truth" is to understand as it is, then it is impossible, because even direct perception understands something similar to the meaning and establishes it as understanding the meaning. And even inference based on the sign of the effect claims to grasp the fire that is the cause of smoke, but only grasps the fire itself. These are from the Treasure of Reasoning: Non-deceptive and clarifying the meaning of what is not known (མི་བསླུ་མ་ཤེས་དོན་གསལ་གཉིས།), are synonyms or spoken separately (རྣམ་གྲངས་པའམ་ཕྱེ་སྟེ་སྨྲ།). If established by two definitions (མཚན་ཉིད་གཉིས་ཀྱིས་འཇོག་ན་ནི།), then what is to be defined will also become two (མཚོན་བྱ་དེ་ཡང་གཉིས་སུ་འགྱུར།). Even if you want two names to define two meanings (མཚན་མཚོན་གཉིས་སུ་འདོད་ན་ཡང་།), it is impossible for a general name to have one meaning (སྤྱི་མཚན་གཅིག་པ་མི་སྲིད་འགྱུར།). The way of eliminating the non-pervasive is not reasonable here (མ་ཁྱབ་གཅོད་ཚུལ་འདིར་མི་འཐད།), dividing it into two is not the intention (གཉིས་སུ་འབྱེད་པ་དགོངས་པ་མིན།). Unnecessary, non-pervasive, and impossible, three (མི་དགོས་མ་ཁྱབ་མི་སྲིད་གསུམ།), if you want to understand the meaning of truth, then they exist (བདེན་པའི་དོན་རྟོགས་འདོད་ན་ཡོད།). Thus, the meaning is well explained. Now we should examine the views of the Tibetans. Some say that the earlier and later scriptures each show one aspect of the definition, and the combination of the two shows one complete definition of valid cognition. Therefore, the new definition of valid cognition is non-deceptive knowledge, and this is also the intention of the gods, because others say that it is the second definition, which is because the aspect of the definition is indicated by the word of the definition. If so, when showing non-deceptive knowledge as the definition of valid cognition, the meaning of clarifying what is not known is not mentioned.
