Because it appears as a name to fools. It also appears as one entity, because of the clinging to "the bulging belly is a pot." For conjecture, there is no such distinction, because both the name and the referent of conjecture are one self-character. Others do not seem to be even slightly inclined to thinking. Second, to specifically determine the nature of valid cognition (Pramana), there are two: determining the nature, and how it cuts off superimpositions. The first has three: refuting the establishment of others, establishing one's own system, and refuting disputes about it. First, the Lord of Reasoning (Rigs pa'i dbang phyug) said that non-deceptive knowledge and clarifying the meaning of what is not understood are the nature of valid cognition. To this, Lha and Shakya both consider each to be a complete nature of valid cognition, and they also consider the meanings to be different. In Lha's commentary, it is said that non-deception is the nature of valid cognition. Clarifying the meaning of what is not understood is also another second nature. In its commentary, it is said that Shakya's other second nature is what the world measures, this is one, and this is another second kind. Among the two explanations of the Ornament (རྒྱན, rgyan), the first is that of the ultimate valid cognition and the conventional valid cognition. The first is the knowledge of non-dual experience, which is clearly experienced by the noble ones themselves with their own self-cognizant wisdom. Its nature is clarifying the meaning of what is not understood, not non-deception, because the meaning of investigation is not obtained. The second is what exists in the continuum of ordinary beings, appearing between the two graspers of grasper and grasped, which can be called conventional, and its nature is non-deceptive knowledge, because the meaning of decision is obtained. In the commentary of the Ornament (རྒྱན, rgyan), it is said that here the word "meaning" refers to the ultimate, and the phrase "clarifying the meaning of what is not understood" means clarifying the ultimate. And it is said that this is the nature of ultimate valid cognition, and the former is conventional. In the self-commentary of the Treasury of Reasoning, it is said that the nature of conventional valid cognition is considered to be the collection of non-deception and clarifying the meaning of what is not understood. The second explanation is that non-deception is the nature of valid cognition.

In establishing it, in order to avoid the fault of even decisive cognition becoming a valid cognition, it is said "clarifying the meaning of what is not known," and it is considered that both together reveal one complete definition. As it is said in the Ornament: "Or this is the definition of valid cognition. Because it clarifies, it is a clarifier; the knowledge that clarifies the meaning of what is not known is valid cognition." Conventional knowledge does not clarify the meaning of what is not known, because it merely shows the appearance of the forms, etc., that are grasped separately. Acharya Dharmakirti, in the Pramāṇaviniścaya, considers the definition of valid cognition to be the non-deception revealed by the three words "these completely determine the meaning and enter, because there is no deception in the function of the meaning," which possesses three characteristics. The three characteristics are: the difference of nature, the ability to obtain the meaning; the difference of object, not obtaining any meaning that is grasped or not grasped, but obtaining the object of entry that is completely determined. The difference of function is the ability to abide in the function of completely determining the meaning. Among these, the difference of nature prevents grasping things as the definition of valid cognition; the difference of object prevents the impossible; the difference of function prevents being too broad, and supplements what prevents being non-pervasive. Realizing the true meaning is the function of valid cognition, not the definition. Those who follow the Brahmins believe that realizing the true meaning possesses three characteristics, that is, eliminating the superimposition with an unerring grasping for the meaning that was not previously realized. This also possesses three differences: the difference of nature is merely eliminating the superimposition of the opposite side, not that valid cognition actually performs refutation and establishment. The difference of object is the meaning that was not previously realized, that is, realizing what was not previously realized in the categories that do not distinguish place, time, and form. The difference of grasping is not being confused about the meaning that one has not superimposed oneself. The three differences also have three functions: the difference of nature, with the function of eliminating superimposition, one is established, and one does not prevent; the difference of object, with the function of what was not previously realized, one is established, and one is not established; the difference of grasping, with the function of not being confused about the meaning, one is established, and it is not contradictory to one being established. The above is the three with detailed explanations.
