Now, the object of comprehension that can be understood is the definition of the actual name of that object. For example, the sound "bottle" is said to be the actual name of a golden bottle, because it is its name, and not its imputed name. If this is not established, then the golden bottle would be something that is called a bottle. The object of comprehension that is later established by convention, with the basis of using the object as an actual name and any similarity or related establishment as the reason, is called the definition of the imputed name of that object. To this, others say: The sound "bottle," has the property, a person seeking the meaning of a bottle should not apply it to a silver bottle, but only to a golden bottle, because you are its actual name. It is pervasive, because having completely abandoned things other than it, it is also said that the sound will change its application. Because it is said like this, it is unreasonable, because that statement is made in terms of the object of convention, and not in terms of the object of the name. Otherwise, the sound "lion," has the property, you should only apply it to the king of beasts, because you are its actual name. The mark and pervasion are accepted, but it cannot be accepted, because you will sometimes be applied to a Brahmin boy. The previous argument is also unreasonable, because if it is a name, it must not be a sound, which has already been said. Furthermore, the sound "bottle," has the property, it should not be the actual name of a golden bottle, because it is the actual name of a silver bottle. The exclusion of the mark is accepted. And some say that the definitions of these two, in order, are: a name that can understand that object as non-common, and a name that can understand that object as common. If it is said like this, the actual name of a bottle, has the property, it should be a name that can understand a bottle as non-common, because it is its actual name. If accepted, then it should not be, because it is used through convention. The pervasion is: what is non-common in what is used through convention? Because it is said like this. In our own system, the definitions of these two, in order, are: a name that is first arbitrarily established for that object, and that can understand that object without error at the time of naming, and the basis for using it as an actual name, and a name that is later established by convention with the establishment of similarity or relatedness of the object as the reason. It is also like this, as it is proclaimed.

What is a real name? Because it is the thing itself and things similar to it. Whatever is commonly referred to by that name is a conventional name. So it is said. Some say: The real name of a pot, in terms of its characteristic, should be a name that can be understood as an unerring pot, because it is the real name of a pot. If you accept that, then the conceptual thought based on the name of the pot should be able to understand it as an unerring pot, because that is accepted. It cannot be accepted, because that conceptual thought is an illusion about the pot. If you say that, then the conceptual thought that appears as appearance to perception, in terms of its characteristic, should not appear as that thing, because it is a conceptual thought. The pervasion is accepted. Furthermore, that thing cannot have a name that can be understood as unerring, because if it is a conceptual thought based on the name of that thing, then it must be an illusion about that thing. It cannot be accepted, because "Whatever is the object of expression for the first unerring consciousness is a real name." So it is said. If real names are classified, there are real names with reasoned explanations and real names with reasoned usage. The first is like "Omniscient," and the second is like "pot." If conventional names are classified, there are those based on similarity and those based on relation. The first is like calling some people "lion" and some medicines "crow's foot." The second has two types: those based on a single possessive relation and those based on a causal relation. The first has four types: a general name applied to a specific, a specific name applied to a general, a name of a collection applied to a part, and a name of a part applied to a collection. The first is like applying "form" to the object of eye consciousness. The second is like applying "sense consciousness" to the consciousness that arises from three conditions. The third is like applying "heard by ear consciousness arising from the consciousness of intention of a letter part" to what is heard by ear consciousness arising from the consciousness of intention of a letter, and calling one side of a cloth burned "the cloth is burned." The fourth is like the sound of a drum and a barley sprout. The second has two types: a cause name applied to an effect, and an effect name applied to a cause. The first is like applying "sun" to the rays of the sun. The second is like applying "inference" to a correct proof statement.
