Because it is established by this method. Therefore, the self-character of external objects is the basis for understanding through the two doors of appearance and elimination, but it is not any of the appearance and elimination distinguished by the two of appearance and elimination. Considering sunlight as appearance is different from the meaning of appearance here. In short, the so-called "that is the nature of self and other," the "self" here has the same meaning as appearance, and the "other" has the same meaning as elimination, which is the key point, but others do not seem to have the ability to understand this profound meaning. So, is the apprehended aspect of the pot-grasping concept appearance or elimination? In this regard, there are two aspects: the aspect of being consciousness and the aspect of superimposing on the external pot. The former is appearance, because the pot-grasping concept is the object of self-cognizant direct perception for its own nature. The latter is elimination, because it is superimposition. Here, too, one should remember the root text and commentary quoted above: "If the general characteristic is the nature of consciousness," and so on. Secondly, the subject-possessing pot-grasping concept is also not the nature of other-elimination. If it is the other-elimination of the pot, then why must it follow the pot? Because it does not follow the pot. Considering this, it is said (in the scripture): "Not different from consciousness, how can it follow other meanings?". According to the commentators, the mind's other-elimination distinguished by the three categories of other-elimination also refers to this, and it is not accepted as superimposition. The mind's other-elimination distinguished by the two of sound's other-elimination and mind's other-elimination is accepted as the nature of other-elimination. It is not accepted that the other-elimination of the opposite is pervaded by non-affirmation, because for this, there is the way of appearance established after cutting off non-affirmation of the object of negation, like the other-elimination of the pot; and the way of appearance of negation after cutting off the real existence of the object of negation, like the other-elimination of the non-pot. The former is the other-elimination of non-negation, and the latter is the other-elimination of non-affirmation. Therefore, for the apprehended aspect appearing to the pot-grasping concept itself, such as superimposing on the external pot, for the superimposition of confusing the apprehended aspect of the concept and the object of attachment as one, when explaining other-elimination, it is established as the nature of other-elimination, and when explaining the general characteristic, it is established as the nature of the general characteristic. Regarding this, below...

The way in which all arising distinctions exist is: if those with intelligence carefully examine the treatises of Dharmakirti, they will realize it. Secondly, in explaining the distinctions, there are three points: the definition of other-exclusion, the determination of its nature, and refuting disputes about exclusion. The first point is: the imputation that appears on that object by cutting off the direct contradiction of that object. Among them, cutting off direct contradictions, cutting off dissimilar kinds, and cutting off non-that are the same in meaning. And the four: other-exclusion, exclusion, negation, and determination, although opposite in meaning, are the same in essence, so they can be represented by one definition. Generalities and general characteristics are coextensive with them, but the opposite meaning must be sought elsewhere. The meaning of cutting off direct contradictions is also: in the conceptual thought that grasps a pot, there is actually no way of grasping "this is a pot established by excluding non-pots." However, the appearance of the pot that appears to oneself, the reason why it is clung to as an external pot, depends on the exclusion of non-pots, because it is clung to as "this is a pot," not clung to as "this is a pillar." Similarly, the sound of saying "pot" is also used by cutting off direct contradictions, although the sound of "pot" is not actually said by excluding non-pots. However, the meaning understood from it depends on the exclusion of non-pots, because after hearing the sound of "pot," the conceptual thought that grasps the pot arises, but the conceptual thought that grasps pillars, etc., does not arise. With this in mind, (in the Commentary on Valid Cognition) it says: "It is not that there are two sounds, because they do not exist mutually." The second (determining its nature) has three points: the classification of other-exclusion, its detailed distinctions, and determining all the key points on one entity. The first point includes two aspects: the establishment of the object and the way the mind clings to it. The first aspect, the object of other-exclusion is: the expressing sound and the two conceptual thoughts. The real object of these two does not exist in things. The object of clinging is the self-character, impermanence, etc., which are not different in meaning, abide in one. Pillars, pots, etc., which are different substances in meaning, abide without mixing with others. Because the self-character that becomes the object of clinging and the self-character that becomes the object of appearance of direct perception are not different in meaning. About this, there are distinctions.
