If asked, isn't it because the fire sparks were not seen that the iron was not seen later? This is a statement that does not distinguish between permanence and momentariness. Because both the iron filings and the fire sparks at the time of burning have already disappeared in the second moment of their own formation. Moreover, the later iron filings are not admitted to be the same substance as the previous fire sparks. The fourth and fifth points are also unreasonable, because the Samkhya school does not consider the general appearance to be coextensive and equal, nor to be coextensive and equal. They also do not think that if there is a general characteristic of a cow, there must be a white or variegated cow. Nor do they consider the general characteristic, the main thing, and the appearance to be coextensive and equal. Second, refuting with scripture. In the Pramāṇavārttika, it says, "The wisdom of the general characteristic is also mistaken." It also says, "The meaning of sound is imputed by the object of discriminative knowledge." It also says, "The general characteristic is an unreal entity, therefore it is not the object of the senses. Therefore, the qualities of the general characteristic are not established by direct perception." In the Catuḥśataka, it says, "Furthermore, this understanding of the general characteristic as something else exists only in its own basis, or it exists everywhere like space and so on. If it exists only in its own basis, then in empty places, such as where there are no pots, when pots and so on appear, how can the general characteristic that exists in substances in different places exist in those places? Because it does not enter into the substance that arises from the previous substance, because it is admitted to be without function. Because the object that exists in another place does not move from there, it is not pervasive between the two, because it does not possess objects in different places." Therefore, for things that arise and perish simultaneously, everything will be connected to everything. If it is not so, it will not become one, or it will only be different in name, because the meaning is admitted and it is called that. Moreover, for something that has not arisen and has not come from anywhere, who can bear the burden of surpassing foolishness? Furthermore, what unreasonableness has this person manifested that he relies on so much tiring talk of general characteristics? Furthermore, in the root text, it says

"The very nature of things is not real." And so on, eight lines of reasoning are explained to establish the non-reality of universals. And: "It is not permissible, therefore it has no nature. That is the characteristic of non-existence." And in its commentary: Lha: "If it is not permissible, why is it non-existent? Like this, it is the characteristic of non-existence. Like this, that which is devoid of all capacity to perform a function is the characteristic of non-existence. If the universal also exists, then it is not a thing. Thus, the universal is non-existent." And: "It is the opposite of what has been said. That is considered its own characteristic." In the commentary to this, Lha says: "It is the opposite of what has been said, and whatever is not to be expressed, 1. that itself, and 2. that which is to be expressed as other, the meaning of the absence of two appears, not the object of undifferentiated consciousness, 3. not the same, 4. not common, 5. whatever is, 6. an understanding that does not depend on the recollection of terms, 7. whatever appears to the self-grasping consciousness as being distinct from the nature of others, and 8. whatever is capable of performing a function, that is considered its own characteristic." And in the self-commentary to "Whatever is capable of performing a function is ultimately existent": "Therefore, it is what produces distinctions, but not the universal, therefore that alone is a thing, thus, whatever is capable of performing a function is ultimately existent," from "a thing is only a distinction, because it is established only from that." In its commentary, Shakya Blo says: "Only a distinction produces, therefore, the distinction of that which produces is the only thing, a thing is ultimately existent, that is the final conclusion." And: "Only from that" means only from the distinction. Establishment means establishment of function. These scriptures show that if it is a thing, it is pervaded by not being a universal, and if it is a universal, it is pervaded by being non-existent. The scripture that if it is a single substance, it is pervaded by arising and ceasing simultaneously is: "If there is no difference, then arising and ceasing change simultaneously." In its self-commentary: "Because there is no difference in nature, like one's own nature, various kinds of distinctions, arising and abiding and
