The object apprehended as a single entity is permanence. When auditory consciousness manifestly apprehends the successive moments of sound, the object apprehended by subsequent conceptualization as "This is A," is like a letter. That which is fabricated by conceptualization from the aggregation of many letters to indicate the essence of a thing is a name. That which is fabricated from the aggregation of many names to indicate the distinction of a thing is a word. A vase and woolen cloth, etc., are not substantially existent, because each of the eight particles of a vase has both the ability to generate its own unique sense consciousness as its result, and the common ability to perform the function of holding water. The vase is established by excluding the latter. Sound is substantially existent, because that which is apprehended by manifest auditory consciousness is established as sound. In short, when the ability to perform the function of holding water is established as the characteristic of a vase, the smell of the vase, which is the aggregation of the other particles of the vase, must also be acknowledged as a vase, because it has the ability to perform the function of holding water. For example, just as each blue particle, which is the aggregation of other blue particles, can generate its own result, sense consciousness. Therefore, conventionally, a vase has the ability to perform the function of holding water, but ultimately it does not. Some scholars believe that the view of the Pramāṇavārttika is that names and words are not substantially existent, but letters are substantially existent, because they are the basis for the composition of names and words, and because they arise sequentially from their own cause, intentional consciousness, and because they generate their own result, auditory consciousness, sequentially. Therefore, the treatise "The Nature of Letters is All-Encompassing" shows that even the shortest part of a letter, such as the short vowel "a," has many moments, but it does not show that each part is not a letter. If so, then name, the subject, should be substantially existent, because it is the basis for the composition of words. All three are admitted. The statement "letters from intentional consciousness," etc., cannot be used as proof that letters are substantially existent, because the meaning of that statement is that each part of a letter arises sequentially from intentional consciousness, and that it generates auditory consciousness sequentially, such as the shortest part of a letter, the short vowel "a," etc.

Because the component parts of sound are also heard sequentially through multiple moments of hearing. Because the mind is also due to that moment. It is said that "letters are understood sequentially." Therefore, each component part of a letter should not be a letter, because the smallest part of a letter, such as the short "A," has multiple component parts, and each component part exists for the duration of an eye blink, which is a fault. If one thinks that each blue dust particle is also not blue, that is a rude expression. Because multiple blue dust particles gather simultaneously to produce their own result—root consciousness. However, the prior and subsequent moments of a letter cannot gather simultaneously to produce their own result—root consciousness. Do not disturb the treatises of Dharmakirti! Third, refuting other schools that consider universals to be non-entities. It is divided into two parts: the refutation of entities and arguments. The first part is: Some say that if it is a universal, it must be a non-entity, and if its multiple particulars do not exist, then it is pervasive that it is a universal, which is the view of the seven treatises. Therefore, forms, sounds, etc., fire, water, etc., and pots, cloths, etc., are all permanent. This is what they say. To refute this, there are five: direct perception, inference by the power of reality, scripture, commitment, and self-contradiction. The first is: Sound, as a subject, auditory direct perception does not establish that you are audible, because you are permanent. If you admit it, then the sound is not audible, which means it is not refuted by auditory direct perception. The second is that the permanence of sound is refuted by inference by the power of reality, because from the sign of being produced, it is established that sound is impermanent. The third is: If the reason is not established, because being produced is not a valid reason to establish that sound is impermanent, then it contradicts what is said in "Destruction is related to the existence of a small part, therefore sound itself is impermanent" and "Whatever exists is destructible like a pot, and sound also exists as a nature sign." Furthermore, if the Mimamsakas believe that the sound of the Vedas is permanent, it is unreasonable to refute it with the various logical arguments of glorious Dharmakirti, because the sound of the Vedas is permanent, which is in accordance with reality. Fourth, if the sign of being produced is used to establish that sound is impermanent, then the own-character of sound is impermanent.
