In the past, there appeared a sage named Kapila. Those who followed the many treatises he composed considered the knowable to be definitively twenty-five in number, and were therefore called Samkhyas. Because they held Sage Kapila as their refuge, they were called Kapilavādins. Because they considered all transformations to be made by the Pradhāna ( प्रधान ,pradhāna, chief, primary), they were called Pradhānavādins. Because they considered the transformations and the Pradhāna to be of one nature, they were called Ekasvabhāvavādins. Because they considered the transformations to be of the nature of the three qualities— रजस् (rajas, passion), तमस् (tamas, darkness), सत्त्व (sattva, goodness)—in equal measure, they were called Trigunavādins. Because they considered the self to be the Puruṣa ( पुरुष ,puruṣa, man, self) of knowledge, the enjoyer, they were called Jñānavādins. The term Puruṣavādins is merely another name. The second part has five aspects: the classification of the knowable, the essence of each, the collection of these, the way they transform into cause and effect, and the establishment of bondage and liberation. First, the knowable is definitively numbered as twenty-five: the self, the Prakṛti ( प्रकृति ,prakṛti, nature), the Mahat (महत् ,mahat, great), the Ahaṃkāra (अहंकार ,ahaṃkāra, ego), the eleven faculties, the five Tanmātras (तन्मात्र ,tanmātra, subtle elements), and the five elements. Second, regarding the essence of each: the self is permanent, real, solitary, indivisible, the eater and enjoyer of all transformations, and exists in all states of bondage and liberation. It is also called the knower, the cognizer, and the Puruṣa ( पुरुष ,puruṣa, man, self). The Prakṛti ( प्रकृति ,prakṛti, nature) is what generates all transformations, and its essence is the equilibrium of the three qualities— रजस् (rajas, passion), तमस् (tamas, darkness), सत्त्व (sattva, goodness). It is also called the cause, the general, and the Pradhāna ( प्रधान ,pradhāna, chief, primary). The Mahat (महत् ,mahat, great) exists between the object and consciousness, arises from its own cause—the Pradhāna—and generates the remaining transformations as its own result. For example, like a two-sided mirror or a glass house. It is also called the intellect. The Ahaṃkāra (अहंकार ,ahaṃkāra, ego) is of three types: the Ahaṃkāra with a greater proportion of रजस् (rajas, passion), the Ahaṃkāra of तमस् (tamas, darkness), and the Ahaṃkāra of सत्त्व (sattva, goodness). The eleven faculties are: the eye, ear, nose, tongue, and body—these five are the faculties of inner consciousness. The mouth, hand, foot, anus, and genitals—these five are the faculties of external action. And the mind faculty that pervades all, making eleven in total. The five Tanmātras (तन्मात्र ,tanmātra, subtle elements) are: form, sound, smell, taste, and touch—these five. The five elements are: earth, water, fire, wind, and space—these five. Third, these twenty-five can be gathered into two
