Of knowledge, there are two types: ascertainment and decisiveness. The first is: the second moment onwards of the blue-perceiving sensory perception. The second is: the definite cognition that arises after direct perception, and the memory that arises after inference, and so on. Doubt and wrong knowledge are largely similar, so they will be explained later in the context of our own system. Secondly, refuting that, there are three: refuting mental inference, refuting non-determination in appearance, and refuting decisiveness. The first of these has two parts: a general refutation and a specific refutation. The first of these has three aspects: refuting by imputation, the fault of being too extreme, and being similar to error. The first is: the mental inference that sound is impermanent, does it rely on the mere establishment of a reason, or does it not rely on it? If it is the second, then that subject, it follows that it is doubt. Because it is a conceptualization that grasps only the commitment without relying on either experience or reason. It is pervasive, because as it says in the 'Pramanaviniscaya': it is the cause of doubt of its own nature, which is not feasible like an object. And it says: from the words of the पक्ष (pakṣa, 宗), it is seen that doubt arises about the meaning, because it is not certain, therefore it is not a real establishment. And in the 'Pramanavarttika' it says: even with the word 'non-existence', that non-existence is not contradictory, if that kind of non-existence is expressed, then at that time it is understood as non-existence. Therefore. If it relies on a reason, does it rely on a correct reason or on a seemingly correct reason? If it is the first, then that subject, it follows that it is a valid cognition. Because it is a knowledge that relies on a correct reason and newly ascertains a hidden truth. If it is not pervasive, then inference also follows that it is not a valid cognition. Because of that non-pervasiveness. If it is the second, then that subject, it follows that it is not a non-valid cognition other than the three: non-conceptualization, wrong conceptualization, and doubt. Because it is a knowledge that relies on any of the three seemingly correct reasons. Secondly: if someone says, the reason that is the basis of mental inference is not any of the three seemingly correct reasons. Then it follows that there is a fourth seemingly correct reason. Because the reason that is the basis of that, is a seemingly correct reason that is not any of the three seemingly correct reasons. If someone says, it is not established, because the reason that is the basis of that, is a correct reason. Then it follows that there is a third valid cognition. Because that is a valid cognition that is not an inference.

Therefore. Third, the determination that does not rely on signs and that the object to be measured, which is hidden, does not conform to the facts is conceptual thought. What kind of conceptual thought is the determination that does not rely on signs and that the object to be measured, which is hidden, conforms to the facts? Because the reason is the same. If you admit it, then it contradicts the fundamental definition. Someone says: It is not pervasive, because the determination that does not rely on signs and that the object to be measured, which is hidden, does not conform to the facts is included in illusion. If so, then the other one is also included in the category of valid cognition, so it will become not conceptual thought. Second, refuting the conceptual thought without reason, refuting the conceptual thought with reversed reason, and refuting that the knowledge based on the scriptures is conceptual thought, among these three, the first is: The thought that there is water in the old well of the ancestors is the subject. It is not a conceptual thought without reason, because seeing the water being taken before, etc., is taken as a reason. Second, for example, from the audible sign, grasping that sound is impermanent, like the uncommon uncertain, and for example, from the sign of the object to be measured, grasping that sound is impermanent, like the real uncertain, and for example, from the sign of the son of the god-given, grasping that the son of the god-given facing outwards is blue, like relying on the correct increase, all thoughts are conceptual thought. Because the conceptual thought with reversed reason is conceptual thought. Grasping that sound is impermanent from the object taken by eye consciousness is also conceptual thought. Because the reason is the same as before. If both are admitted, then it contradicts the master's saying, "For the sect, there is no power of doubt, and the determiner of wanting what is not desired." Third, if it is said that the wisdom arising from hearing based on the scriptures is conceptual thought, then it is unreasonable, because there are three kinds of scriptures: scriptures with establishment, scriptures with harm, and scriptures with neither harm nor establishment. Among them, the mind that relies on the first one and determines its own object of attachment is included in the category of valid cognition. The mind that relies on the second one is included in the category of illusion. The mind that relies on the third one, due to the difference between the existence and non-existence of the object of attachment, is sequentially included in the category of doubt and unknown mind. Second, refuting the appearance but not determining, divided into general refutation and separate refutation. The first is:
