How can it follow other meanings if it is not different from knowledge? Likewise, common knowledge is also confused. It is to be known that such things are said. Therefore, thinking of these meanings and claiming to know the common meaning is to lack the ability to understand the meaning of the scriptures. In short, as it is said in the 'Treasure of Reasoning': 'If the image of discrimination is spoken, it becomes the object of self-characterization. The opposite of self-characterization is not the object of speech. What is established by delusion is non-existent.' If you know the meaning of this, there is no reason not to understand it. Fourthly, it is entailed that there is no valid means of measuring non-existence. If it is the object of the valid means that is the cause of acceptance and rejection, then it must be a self-characterization. If so, there is no fault, because the valid means of measuring non-existence is to distinguish whether there is self-characterization or not. Those are, as it is said in the 'Treasure of Reasoning': 'If it is said that holding two objects is harmful,' up to 'there is no contradiction because it is for accomplishment,' the meaning of five and a half verses has been explained without error. Secondly, there are two: debate and answer. Firstly, it is unreasonable to hold that the object to be measured of the apprehended object is one self-characterization, because the apprehended object that has become an external object is prohibited by the wise, because it is not accepted as the apprehended object of consciousness. Secondly, there are three: a general explanation of the tenets, a refutation of what others have established, and an establishment of the Sugata's system. Firstly, the non-Buddhists who assert nature as the cause hold nature as the cause, the Ishvaravadins hold Ishvara as the cause, the Samkhyas hold Prakriti as the cause, the Vaisheshikas and the two Hinayana schools hold atoms as the cause, the Mind-Only school holds all appearances as mind, and those who assert no-self-nature say that all phenomena are free from elaboration in the ultimate truth, and in the conventional truth they are the same as the realists, or they may be the same as worldly conventions. Secondly, it is unreasonable to hold nature as the cause, because it is harmed by the reasoning that prevents arising from no cause. It is also unreasonable to hold Ishvara and Prakriti as the cause, because it is harmed by the reasoning that prevents arising from permanence. Thirdly, there is the identification of the intention, and how the teacher established them.

Of the two, the first is that the Sugata, when engaging in establishing conventions, accepts the existence of atoms. Regarding this, there are two schools of thought: the Vaibhashika and the Sautrantika. When engaging in the ultimate truth of conventions, they accept the Mind-Only school, which has two aspects: the real and the false. When engaging in the ultimate truth, they establish that all phenomena are free from elaboration. This is the Madhyamaka. Some who claim to be the self-commentary of the 'Treasury of Reasoning' rely on this category and assert that the doctrine of the 'Treasury of Reasoning' is to lead the ultimate intention of the 'Commentary on Valid Cognition' to the Madhyamaka. This is actually erecting a banner that demonstrates one's own coarse intellect. Among the many internal and external schools of thought discussed above, it is shown here that there are four Buddhist schools. Among these four, the establishment of the tenets of the Sutra and Mind-Only schools in this 'Commentary on Valid Cognition' will be connected to the following sections, so there is no need to create such confusion. Secondly, among the four Buddhist schools, which one does the teacher ultimately establish? Regarding this, there are two: the object of knowledge and the appearance of knowledge. When accepting the former, they refute the Vaibhashika's view that sense consciousness directly and without any conceptualization grasps external objects that are simultaneous with it, and they accept the Sautrantika's view that merely the aggregation of the three conditions in the previous moment causes the sense consciousness to arise with the appearance of the object in the second moment, and from this, external objects are understood. The teacher himself said, 'If one engages in external analysis, I rely on the Sautrantika school.' So it is said. When accepting the latter, the appearance of knowledge, they refute the view of the Realists that the coarse appearance that appears to sense consciousness is truly established, and they accept the non-appearance. Therefore, it is said, 'Therefore, in objects and consciousness, coarse appearance does not exist.' And so on. Therefore, in this case, among the two schools of Sutra and Mind-Only, if the aforementioned debate is made from the perspective of the Sautrantika, then the first reason is not established, because that school holds that the external object that generates the appearance itself is the object to be grasped. If it is made from the perspective of the Mind-Only school, then it is acceptable, because that school holds that the object as the object to be grasped and the grasper do not exist. The meaning is
