And, the place where the harm of abandonment can occur is only the own-character (Skt. svalakṣaṇa, 自相), because only the own-character can produce benefit and harm, the common-character (Skt. sāmānyalakṣaṇa, 共相) cannot do that. Because "This is the result of taking and abandoning, all individuals enter." And "If there is no ability to act, what is the use of examining the pursuit?" Because it is said like this. When the only one own-character is used as the object of measurement for direct perception of meaning consciousness, it is the object to be taken; when it is used as the object of measurement for inference, it is the object of attachment. Relying on these two valid cognitions, when an individual enters, he is not deceived, so it is also the object of entry. Considering this meaning, the Commentary on the Compendium of Valid Cognition says: "The own-character itself, if measured directly, is the object to be taken; if measured indirectly, it is the object of attachment; and both are the object of entry because the individual is not deceived when entering." The meaning of "measuring directly" is also the meaning of "measuring manifestly," which can be known through the strength of the words. In short, when the two valid cognitions, direct perception and inference, measure the only one own-character, although there are two objects to be measured in the way of entering, own-character and common-character, the object to be measured in the object of entry is only the own-character, which is the unerring view of "one's own nature is the object to be measured," and so on. Third, refuting arguments has two parts: refuting arguments against the non-existence of objects of erroneous consciousness, and refuting arguments against the own-character as the object to be taken. The first has four parts: refuting the contradiction with the statement that there are two objects to be measured, refuting the argument that the common-character of meaning and the non-existence of manifestation are the same in object, refuting the contradiction with experience, and refuting the fault that negation cannot be cognized by valid cognition. First, if when the two valid cognitions, direct perception and inference, measure the only one own-character, the object of entry is only the own-character, then it contradicts the statement of the teacher Dignāga that there are two objects to be measured. If you say this, there is no fault. Because the only one own-character has two ways of knowing, knowing from its own nature and knowing from the common-character of other meanings, so it is established as two, own-character and common-character. For one's own nature, the aspect of the own-character given from oneself is established as one's own nature, and the own-character itself is established as one's own nature. The former is the meaning of the own-character of meaning, and the latter is the meaning of the own-character of consciousness, and to summarize both, it is established as one's own nature.

As I have said. If it is said that the former does not conform to the self-characteristic of the thing itself, because it is a different entity from that thing. Answer: There is no fault, because it is the appearance established from the self-characteristic itself, so it is named with the name of the self-entity. The appearance that appears in the conceptual mind is not established from the self-characteristic itself, but is the appearance established by other habits, so it is called the other-entity. If you do not understand this key point, then the meaning of the scripture "That is the self and other entity" will not be found even after countless kalpas. Second, if it is said that the general meaning does not exist in things, but if it is measurable, then the appearance of non-existence is also the same as this, answer: There is no fault, because although the former is not a self-characteristic, the self-characteristic that obtains the place to enter based on it exists; while the latter, the self-entity is not a self-characteristic, and the self-characteristic that obtains the place to enter based on it also does not exist. Third, if it is said that the two that appear are not self-characteristics, then it contradicts the clear appearance in consciousness, answer: There is no fault, in the part of the appearance that appears clearly in the conceptual mind, and the part of clinging to the external object as real, among these two, the former is consciousness, and the latter is the general characteristic, because: Because the object of tolerance abides, it is not recognized, Because it recognizes itself, it is consciousness. And: If this generality is the nature of consciousness, Then it should be a fault to be the meaning, Because it is admitted as such, there is no fault. And in its commentary it says: Because it is the nature of consciousness, so if it is thought that the general characteristic is also a self-characteristic, then there is no contradiction. And how is it a general characteristic? It is explained: From the general characteristic of the nature of things, from the perspective of the nature of the object, it is established as a general characteristic, but not from the perspective of the nature of consciousness. What reason makes it also established from the perspective of the nature of things? It is explained: Because the nature is the same in all things, the appearance is the same for all things that are the same in appearing and acting as things. This is the meaning of what is called the nature of following. The meaning of these scriptures is that the apprehended aspect that appears in the conceptual mind is the self-characteristic of consciousness, so although it is not a general characteristic in things, because it is the basis for clinging to it as a general characteristic, it can also be said to be a general characteristic. And, for those things that appear clearly, there is a doubt whether it is a following general characteristic, in order to dispel this doubt.
