The aspects and classifications should be understood by inferring from the previous ones. Secondly, examining the arguments, there are four: examining whether it possesses faults or merits, examining whether possessing faults and possessing merits are contradictory or not, examining whether the faults of the reason and the faults of the subject are contradictory or not, and examining the difference between faults and what is to be eliminated. First, some say that the incompleteness of the three modes is a fault of a valid reason, not a fault of a seemingly valid reason, because what is the obstacle to it becoming a valid reason? It is not an obstacle to it becoming a seemingly valid reason. If it is a fault of a valid reason, then it is not necessary to possess a valid reason, because if it is a fault of that thing, then it is not necessary to possess that thing. If not admitted, then the novice vows in the continuum of a monk, is a phenomenon, should possess a novice, because it is a merit of a novice. Furthermore, the incompleteness of the three modes is a merit of a seemingly valid reason, because that is its state. Saying this is unreasonable, because afflictive obscuration should not be a fault of samsara, because it is an obstacle to attaining nirvana, but it is not an obstacle to attaining samsara. It is also unreasonable for a valid reason to have faults of the reason, because in that case, the valid reason would become one possessing faults of the reason. The self-view is that faults of the reason exist in seemingly valid reasons, because seemingly valid reasons are those possessing faults of the reason. The merits of the reason exist in valid reasons, because valid reasons are those possessing merits of the reason. Secondly, some say that possessing faults of the reason and possessing merits of the reason are not contradictory, because the made thing that establishes sound as permanent is both. That is also possessing merits, because that is the reason of the subject that is pervasive. Pervasive, because the subject is a merit of the reason. It is faulty, because the pervasion about it is contradictory. Pervasive, because contradictory pervasion is a fault of the reason. Furthermore, a person with merits and a person with faults should be contradictory, because the two are contradictory. If admitted, then a sentient being who is an ordinary person, is a phenomenon, should not be a person with merits, because he is a person with faults. They say this. To this, others say, the reason that can establish sound as permanent, and the reason that cannot establish sound as permanent.

They are not contradictory, because a flawed reason and a virtuous reason are not contradictory. It is pervasive: because all reasons, for their own thesis, have already cut off flaws and virtues. Because it is said so. Also, those two are contradictory, because there is no virtuous reason that cannot establish its own thesis. As it is said in the Pramāṇavārttika: The flaws and virtues of all reasons should be considered in relation to what is to be established. Dharmakīrti said: That which establishes its own thesis is a virtuous reason, and eliminating it is a flawed reason. In the Alaṃkāra it is said: All reasons are said to consider flaws and virtues in relation to their own thesis. The self-view is: There is no common basis for a virtuous reason and a flawed reason, these teachings have been established. However, merely possessing each of the three aspects does not necessarily become a virtue of the reason, because merely possessing each of the three aspects does not necessarily establish the thesis. If so, does it contradict the statement that it is divided into three aspects? Answer: This refers to the case where all three aspects are possessed, each possessing one aspect, so there is no fault. Third, some people think that these two are not contradictory, if they are contradictory, then when stating "Sound is the subject, it is permanent, because it is permanent", sound is permanent, refuted by valid cognition, as the subject, that should not become the subject fallacy of that side, because that side is the reason fallacy. The reason is established, because sound is permanent, refuted by valid cognition, therefore permanence is the reason fallacy of that side. Also, sound is permanent, refuted by valid cognition, that should not become the subject fallacy of that side, because that is the reason fallacy of that side. Pervasive, because permanence is the reason of that side, the reason and subject are different, because it is not established. Therefore, although the reason fallacy and the subject fallacy, where the reason, subject, and meaning are different, are contradictory, in general, they think that these two are not contradictory. That is unreasonable, because the pervasion of the inference "Is this the fault of those?" is not established by valid cognition, because those two are not contradictory. The fault of merely adhering to the thesis and the fault of merely stating it as a reason are not contradictory, because those two are not contradictory.
