Now, let's begin the discussion. For what needs to be excluded solely, it is necessary to establish a reason that can become the thesis, while for the exclusion of the essence and the other four, this is not necessary. Some ask, why is the unexcluded not actually explained at that time? Because in the case of "commitment is also valid cognition," etc., one might ask why the essence and the other four are not actually explained. If the answer is that it is because that is the occasion for explaining the unexcluded, then the rebuttal is that the previous occasion was also for explaining the essence and the other four, and it is unreasonable to make such an analogy, because the doubt will arise again as to why it is the occasion for explaining the essence and the other four. The answer to this is that it is unreasonable to say that it is for the purpose of separately explaining the sutra verse "direct perception, inference, trustworthy fame, and self-reliance," because in the case of "only the essence is to be shown," etc., only the first four should be explained without actually explaining the unexcluded, since the two sentences indicating the unexcluded are separate. Our own view is that the first four aspects explained in the sutra, and the commitment to the thesis explained from the perspective of reasoning, are both considered only from the perspective of establishing for others. In order to understand that both of these need the unexcluded to become a true establishment for others, the first four aspects are explained together in this Commentary on Valid Cognition, because it is said in the sutra, "Commitment is also valid cognition, it is accepted as unobstructed by those." Second, the detailed explanation of the unexcluded, from the perspective of excluding the opposite, has three aspects: refutation, answer, and determination of its nature. The first is, if the meaning of the unexcluded is understood as not being excluded by valid cognition, is the valid cognition that excludes limited to direct perception and inference, or is it not limited? If it is not limited, it contradicts the limitation of valid cognition to direct perception and inference; if it is limited, it contradicts the sutra's statement that there are four types of valid cognition. The second is that the valid cognition that excludes is limited to direct perception and inference, so there is no first fault, and the latter two are included in inference, so there is no second fault either. Third, it is divided into three: definition, classification, and the meaning of each. First, regarding the definition, some say that the definition of the exclusion of valid cognition

You say that it is unreasonable to say that it is prevented by valid cognition (pramāṇa), because the commitment itself is valid cognition, and it is believed that valid cognition is without prevention. Therefore, the prevention by valid cognition is not shown as the definition of the elimination of valid cognition, but to explain that the two are the same in meaning and different in name. Some say that it is unreasonable to say that it is directly contradictory to the meaning established by valid cognition, because the absence of a pot is the object to be expressed. Because that is the reason for that definition, because it is the direct contradiction of the existence of a pot, because it is directly contradictory to it. It cannot be considered fundamental, because it is established by valid cognition. One's own tenet is that only the commitment itself can establish the contradiction of direct elimination. If it is said that the absence of a pot is the object to be expressed, because that is the reason for that definition, because the existence of a pot can directly eliminate it, then the reason is not established, because both have the valid cognition of support. Secondly, there are two types of distinctions: distinction by way of commitment and distinction by way of elimination. The first has five types: the intention of the commitment to negate the nature of the dharma, the difference of the dharma, the difference of the subject of the dharma, the nature of the subject of the dharma itself, and the intention of the commitment to negate both, which are respectively: sound is not audible, a limb is a different thing from the one with three qualities, the one with three qualities is a different thing from its own limb, the one with three qualities exists, all languages are false in meaning, and so on. This is the view of Lha Shakya. Gyanchenpo believes that it is unreasonable to recognize the intention of the commitment that harms the difference of the dharma and the difference of the subject of the dharma in the opposite way to the former, because it contradicts what is said in the Compendium (Kunsle). Secondly, there are five types: the basis of distinction, the nature of distinction, the reason for distinguishing with what, the meaning of how to distinguish, and the elimination of doubts about number and order. The first is only the elimination of valid cognition. The second is that in the gate of reasoning, it is said that there are five types: direct perception, inference after the power of things, commitment, self-utterance, and the elimination of fame. In the Compendium, commitment and self-utterance are combined into credibility, and it is said that there are four types. Then, what is the reason for combining the two into one? Some say that both pure self-utterance and pure scriptural utterance are universal.
