In terms of division, there are two types: valid reasoning for establishing meaning and valid reasoning for establishing name. Regarding this, there are two aspects: refutation and establishment. Firstly, some say that the characteristics of valid signs for establishing meaning and establishing name are respectively: A valid sign related to that, which is a common ground that is both an object to be grasped as the actual property to be proven of that, and is also a nature, and if it is that, then it must be a nature; A valid sign related to that, which is a common ground that is both an object to be grasped as the actual property to be proven of that, and is also a signified, and if it is that, then it must be a signified. If one says this, then in the position of the opponent, in order to prove that sound is not momentary and that sound is impermanent, the subject, sound, is impermanent because it is produced. When this is stated, the subject, produced, is entailed by the first two characteristics, because it is a signified. And that subject is entailed by the latter signified, because of the latter two characteristics. If one accepts this, then such an opponent, in your position, is not a valid reasoning for establishing the name that sound is impermanent, because you are an opponent who is uncertain about the meaning of sound being impermanent. Some divide it into three: merely establishing meaning, merely establishing name, and establishing both meaning and name. The first is: Intelligence, the subject, is certain to perish immediately after arising, because it is produced. The second is: In a place purified by a vase, the subject, there is no vase, because the vase is not perceived by valid cognition. The third is: cause, pervader, and non-perception are all valid reasonings. It is not reasonable to say this, because if it is a valid sign for establishing meaning, then it contradicts being a valid sign for establishing name. Some say that the characteristic of a valid sign for establishing meaning is: a reason that possesses the three modes, which does not primarily establish the name of the property to be proven, merely stated on the subject that one wishes to know. If divided, there are two types: merely establishing meaning and solely establishing meaning. The first is: sound, the subject, is impermanent, because it is produced. The second is: sound, the subject, is certain to perish immediately after arising, because it is produced. The characteristic of a valid reasoning for establishing name is: merely stating the

A reason that fulfills the three aspects of not needing to primarily establish the meaning of the dharma to be established. If divided, there are two types: merely establishing a term and solely establishing a term. The first is: In a rocky fortress without trees, the subject is: there is no shade, because there are no trees. The second is: reasons where the nature is not observed, and so on. It is said. So, is 'being made' a valid reason for merely establishing the term that sound is impermanent? 'No trees' is a valid reason for merely establishing the term that there is no shade in a rocky fortress without trees, because it is a valid reason for merely establishing the term. If you accept this, it contradicts that it is a valid reason for merely establishing the meaning. Secondly, there are three aspects: definition, examining contradiction and non-contradiction, and identifying meaning and term. The first is: the definition of a valid reason for establishing meaning. A reason that merely speaks of the three aspects of the relationship between the sign and the signified not being established on the dharma. If divided, there are two types: taking the signified as the dharma to be established and taking the definition as the dharma to be established. Respectively: Sound, the subject, is impermanent, because it is made. And, the one with a happy mind, the subject, is momentary, because it is made, and so on. The definition of a valid reason for establishing a term. A reason that merely speaks of the three aspects of the relationship between the sign and the signified being established on the dharma. That is, taking negation as an example: In the place of a pot, the subject, there is no pot, because the pot is not observed by valid cognition. And, taking establishment as an example: White yogurt, the subject, is a cow, because it is a lump composed of milk and so on. The second is: Some say that these two are not contradictory, because the scripture says: Therefore, cause and nature. In the commentary on this, it says: Causes and pervasive non-appearances are also reasons for both. And, in the explanation of this commentary, Shas says: 'Also' means that it also establishes both negation and term. Chokyong says: 'Also' is for negation and term. Just as fruit and what is to be pervaded are not permissible, the non-appearance of cause and what is to be pervaded makes one understand both the non-existence of things and the term of negation. And, the reasoning is that it is not reasonable to think that there are disputants who are ignorant of both meaning and term. It follows that the sign and the signified are not contradictory, these two
