Alas! Regarding this, promise is the sign of the result, and what is renowned in the world is the sign of self-nature. Thus spoke the Teacher. Regarding the correctness of the sign of trustworthiness, the way it is explained in the scriptures and commentaries, the way it is accepted by the wise, and the identification of the reasonable aspects, there are three. The first is, in the Pramāṇavārttika, it says: "Sounds accompany things, if they do not exist, they do not arise, because they themselves do not exist, thereby things are proven." And, in the auto-commentary, it also says: "Even so, inference is not without fault, because sounds do not necessarily not arise when things do not exist." And, in its commentary, Śās says: "Knowledge based on scripture is not without fault, but is with faults. Why? Because sounds do not necessarily not arise when things do not exist, because there is no connection between them." And, the author of the Ornament also says: "Trustworthy words are in accordance with the result, and fame is in accordance with self-nature. Why is this sign not real?" It is explained: "Because self and other trust are the same." And so on. Yama also says: "How should the three inferences be understood? It should be said thus. The distinction of clarity is not three kinds, but through the distinction of self-nature, result, and their reflections." Jina also says: "Is inference not infinite due to the distinction of time and place, etc.? How can it be three kinds? To this it should be said, the distinction of clarity is not three kinds, then why? It is through the distinction of result, self-nature, and what is similar to it." From these statements, it seems that the sign of trustworthiness is said to be not a correct reason. Furthermore, the author of the Sutra says: "Trustworthy words are not deceptive, inference is from the general." And, here it also says: "Trustworthy words are not deceptive, from the general, even if this object is hidden, because there is no opportunity, the mind is said to be inference." And, when transforming to the third place, "Accepting the scriptures is reasonable." And, in the Tattvasaṃgraha, it says: "For such an object, it is necessary to undoubtedly make the scriptures a valid means of cognition." And, Śās says: "The dharma based on the scriptures is a sign that has been thoroughly examined.

Also for this reason, the establishment of treatises would also become like that. Furthermore, in all the root texts and commentaries, it is clearly stated how the scriptures are used as refutation and establishment, and thus it also appears as if the scriptures are said to be reliable inferences. The second view is that some people think that there are no reliable signs and inferences, because the commentaries and explanations mentioned earlier have been established. The reason is: the scriptures must be related to their own teachings, because they exist. If admitted, then it must be related to its own teachings and what arises from it. Whichever is admitted, because it has no single connection with me (the subject). If admitted, then the relationship between what is expressed and the way of expression must not be determined by human will. Because of this admission. If the pure scripture is related to it and what arises from it, then the pure scripture that predicts the future will also become like that. It is impossible to admit this, because there is no such thing as the result being produced first and the cause being produced later. Also, the scripture that shows that happiness arises from generosity and other practices must be the correct sign that establishes that happiness arises from generosity and other practices. Because of this commitment. If admitted, then the phrase "sound is impermanent" will become the correct sign that establishes that sound is impermanent, and the subject, reason, and example will also become correct. Furthermore, even if the subject is analyzed, it is unreasonable, is generosity etc. the subject, or is white dharma the subject? If it is the former, it is unreasonable, the subject of the reliable sign, since it is said to be established only by scriptural validity, then it is established by perceptual validity. If it is the latter, then when the subject is established, what is to be established will also be established, because the establishment as dharma is established from the point of view of generating happiness. Even if the reason is analyzed, it is unreasonable, if only the words are taken as a sign, then the pervasion will be wrong, the words of special people are difficult to understand, and there are no words made by non-humans, they think so. Some scholars believe that there are reliable signs and inferences, but the way of establishing will appear later. The third view is that the first view is unreasonable, because it would lead to the absence of validity of extremely hidden realizations, would lead to the absence of treatises that have the four perfections of necessity etc., and the extent of what to take and leave.
