Because the sign as a reason and the thing possessing that sign are undifferentiated, the inference possessing that sign itself is the grasping of the sign, but the sign-grasping of the result-sign is considered to be the direct perception of seeing smoke on a mountain. Lha Shakya considers the decisive knowledge that grasps what should be established as a sign. Such is the mind of the sign. In the commentary, Lha says: The form of the cause and nature, on which the things such as smoke that have become its result, or that which has become its nature, are indicated, is such a sign. Whatever mind is its object, that is the consciousness. Smoke and so forth are its result or its nature, existing only in the general aspect and so forth, and are associated with other distinctions and arise, and discriminate as having the nature of being made and so forth. That whose object, the form of its result and nature, does not arise without that thing, is also the mind of such a sign, because its cause is ultimately that thing. Sha says: Whatever arises after the direct perception that has the sign as its object is also nominally called a valid cognition, because it is the cause of valid cognition. Nyima Senge also holds the same view. In its commentary, it says: The consciousness of the sign itself is not considered to be the object of the thing, but the consciousness immediately following it is the consciousness of the sign. The second view is that some former scholars considered that Dharmottara's view is that grasping the relation of the sign and the property on the subject is the inference possessing that sign, and the recollection of the universal commonality that grasps the relation of the sign and the property on the example is only the mind that grasps the sign. Others consider that it refers to the prior recollection of the property of the subject, so the definition of the mind that grasps the sign is the intelligence that measures the way of the correct sign that has become the cause of the inference of its own result. The divisions are two minds that grasp the sign: the property of the subject and the measurement of pervasion. It should be known that each of these has two valid cognitions, direct perception and inference, and the decisive knowledge that is led by them. Although it is said so, the view of the commentary seems to be the former one. Some consider that Lha Shakya's view is that the decisive knowledge that ascertains the property of the subject has become the lineage cause of the valid cognition of the autonomous inference.

Some believe that the memory that obstructs at that time is only the memory consciousness that remembers pervasion. Others say that, regarding the nature and arising of the sign-apprehending mind, firstly, since apprehending either the property of the subject or the pervasion alone cannot be the cause of inference, it is not a sign-apprehending mind. Therefore, apprehending the property of the subject is the wisdom that apprehends the subject as possessing the sign, following the valid cognition that ascertains the property of the subject. Apprehending the pervasion is apprehending the relationship between the sign and the property, relying on the valid cognition that establishes the pervasion relationship on the example. However, as the teacher said, it is not the direct cause of inference, so it is not the direct cause. Secondly, for the sign of nature, after hearing the sound's own character through auditory consciousness, the valid cognition that ascertains the property of the subject, which realizes that the sound is produced, arises. From that, the sign-apprehending mind that ascertains the property of the subject arises. Relying on the valid cognition that realizes the pervasion relationship on the example, the sign-apprehending mind that apprehends the pervasion relationship arises. From the function of these two sign-apprehending minds, the wisdom that remembers the three modes arises. From that, inference arises. For the sign of effect, some say that the direct perception of seeing smoke is the valid cognition that ascertains the property of the subject, so from there, the sign-apprehending mind that ascertains the property of the subject arises, etc., as before. Among these views, the view of Dharmakirti is not reasonable, because if the wisdom that apprehends the pervasion relationship on the subject is considered inference, then this contradicts the commitment to remembering what has already been apprehended. Considering the wisdom that apprehends the pervasion relationship on the example as the sign-apprehending mind also contradicts the great treatises, because in that case, the sign-apprehending mind would arise from the example, not from the sign. Because the root treatise says that the sign-apprehending mind arises from the sign. For the constant sign of nature, considering the inference of the subject itself as the sign-apprehending mind is also unreasonable, because this contradicts the fact that the sign-apprehending mind is said to be the cause of the inference of the subject. Considering the direct perception of seeing smoke as the sign-apprehending mind is also unreasonable, because Dignāga said that the sign-apprehending mind is divided into direct perception and pseudo-direct perception. Lha Shak's view is that of ascertaining the property of the subject.
