Is that a concordant side or a discordant side? If it's like the first case, then steam, the subject, is necessarily with fire, because it is ash material. If it's like the second case, then smoke, the subject, is necessarily without fire, because it is ash material. If it is not either of the two sides, then it contradicts the determination of the two sides. Also, when proving that the sound of a conch shell arises from effort from the sign of being made, is being made a concordant side or a discordant side? If it's like the first case, then lightning and forest flowers, the subject, are necessarily produced by effort, because they are made. If it's like the second case, then a clay pot, the subject, is necessarily not produced by effort, because it is made. If it is not either of the two sides, then it contradicts the determination of all knowable things into two sides. Also, from a sign that possesses the three modes, when proving that being made is the term for a correct sign, is merely the opposite of knowable things a concordant side or a discordant side? If it's like the first case, then that knowable thing necessarily becomes a correct sign for proving that sound is impermanent. If it's like the second case, then does merely the opposite of knowable things pervade or not pervade the possession of the three aspects of a reason? If it pervades, then it necessarily becomes a contradictory sign concerning that. If it does not pervade, then the possession of the three modes necessarily becomes not a knowable thing. If it is not either of the two sides, then it contradicts the determination of all knowable things into two sides. The second has four: it is unreasonable to investigate, it is too extreme, analysis destroys the classification, and it is not the teacher's intention. The first is: does a correct sign act on the meaning of refutation and establishment, or does it act in the mind? If it's like the first case, then it is unreasonable, therefore, things are dependent on existence, external objects are not dependent, for the meaning of sound, relying on this, therefore here is the intention of all establishment and refutation. Because it was said that way. If it's like the second case, then all knowable things necessarily become unable to determine the two sides of one combination. Refutation and establishment act in the mind, when establishing that sound is impermanent, because it is the occasion for debate, in the mind of the opponent, that is also not a concordant side concerning that, because there exists also not a discordant side. The second has three: it is difficult to state the definition of the property of the subject, it is difficult to state the definition of following and reversing, and an uncertain reason necessarily becomes unreasonable. The first is: there is no knowable thing that belongs to neither the concordant side nor the discordant side,

It follows that, according to the Prasangikas, all knowable things are definitively divided into two aspects of a single encompassing set. If you assert this, then because there are no aspects, it is impossible to establish the characteristic of being a property of the subject-side. In the case of a valid sign, it follows that it is reasonable to establish as a characteristic that whatever is the concordant side of what is to be known and desired is necessarily in accordance with what is to be posited, and in the case of a contradictory sign, whatever is the discordant side of what is to be known and desired is necessarily in accordance with what is to be posited. There is no characteristic of being a property of the subject-side, because it is necessary to establish the characteristic of the first mode. Secondly, it follows that what exists only on the concordant side of the sign should not be established as "subsequent occurrence," because in the case of a valid sign, the subject-property of what is to be known and desired is the concordant side, so the fault is that what exists on it would also be a subsequent occurrence. It follows that what does not exist on the discordant side of the sign should not be established as "reversal," because in the case of a contradictory sign, the subject-property of what is to be known and desired is the discordant side, so the fault is that what exists on it would also be a reversal. Thirdly, when establishing sound as impermanent, if what is heard is posited as the sign, then it follows that it is not an inconclusive reason that is a non-common one of that kind, because it is a common one of the subject-property and the concordant side of what is to be known and desired of that kind. When establishing sound as impermanent, if what is to be measured is posited as the sign, then it follows that it is not an inconclusive reason that is a common one that applies to both sides of that kind, because it is only one of either of the two sides of that kind. If the third point is analyzed, the establishment is destroyed, because the basis of the three modes is necessarily those two. They say: We assert it, because the basis of the sign is necessarily two sides. If so, then it follows that the modes of the sign are necessarily two, because that is what has been asserted. Fourth, it is not the intention of the teacher, because it is unreasonable that all knowable things are definitively divided into two aspects of a single encompassing set, because the teacher said, "Property of the subject-side, concordant side, existence or non-existence, etc.," and explained the nine reasons that have the property of the subject-side, and if it is not contradictory to exist in both, then it will be so, but if it is not so, then it is not established on sound. Like this, that kind of sound is the subject-side itself, and not any of the sides that are in accordance with the subject-side, because it is discrimination and
