Therefore, it is evident that there are seven reasonings: two reasonings stated by Dignāga and five reasonings stated by Dharmakīrti. In the former commentary of "Together with Consciousness," Devendrabuddhi says, "Because Devendrabuddhi explained 'Thus, the consciousness of the object,' etc., 'With consciousness,' etc., reveals other reasonings of its own school." And in the commentary of "Here also, the fault is as before," it says, "The consciousness of the object, that is, the so-called consciousness, etc., after explaining, it itself also excellently establishes the two modes." Therefore, the latter five reasonings clearly show that Dharmakīrti establishes the two modes in the meaning of Dignāga's treatise through reasoning. The first reasoning is: the consciousness with the object of apprehension is the object consciousness, and the memory consciousness that remembers the past is its consciousness. The difference between them is that the former may give rise to the doubt of 'Has the image of the object arisen?', but the latter should not give rise to this doubt. Because the image that appears in the latter is neither an external object, nor a common entity, nor a non-associated compositional factor. Therefore, the latter is established as having the image of the object, because the latter arises from the former. This is 'Arising from all objects,' etc. To this, Devendrabuddhi says in the former commentary: 'In order to establish the two modes of consciousness, the object consciousness is its consciousness, from the difference is the two modes.' He intends to explain the quoted treatise, therefore he mentioned 'All are consciousness,' etc. The second reasoning is: the consciousness that appears as an object, the former former is the object consciousness, and the latter latter is its consciousness. Therefore, consciousness can also establish the two modes through the difference of more or less images of the former and latter consciousnesses. This is 'Experiential consciousness is also,' etc. To this, Devendrabuddhi says in the former commentary: 'Through experience, etc., the object consciousness is its consciousness, from the difference is the two modes.' He wrote in this way. The third reasoning is: the apprehended image that appears to the sense consciousness in its own time is the object consciousness, and the sense consciousness itself is its consciousness. From the sign of determining the simultaneous object, the two modes are established, which is 'Together with consciousness,' as quoted before.

That is said. The fourth reasoning is: The appearance of objects in the sense consciousness arising from the clear and unclear self-cause sense faculties, and the intermediate state, is the object consciousness, and the three sense consciousnesses are its consciousness. These three depend on each other, and from the difference between clear and unclear appearances, two modes are established, namely, clarity due to the difference of the sense faculties, etc. In the earlier commentary on this, it says: Here, too, by establishing two modes, etc., other reasonings are shown. The fifth reasoning is: When the consciousness of the self-cause eye faculty, which has been harmed by dimness, sees the tip of a lamp as a flower-like circle, the apprehended aspect of the sense consciousness appearing there is the object consciousness, and the sense consciousness is its consciousness. Even though there is no flower-like circle there, two modes are established from the difference of appearance, namely, lamps, etc., are like circles, etc. In the earlier commentary on this, it says: This also shows that consciousness is indeed of two modes, like this. The sixth reasoning is: The apprehended aspect appearing in the sense consciousness when viewed from three distances—near, far, and very far—is the object consciousness, and the three sense consciousnesses are its consciousness. Depending on each other, two modes are established from the difference between clear and unclear appearances, namely, differences such as near and far, etc. In the earlier commentary on this, it says: Now, the external object itself does not exist, but in order to explain that the mind appears as the aspect of the grasper and the grasped, differences such as near and far, etc., are mentioned. The seventh reasoning is: The appearance of consciousness, etc., in the mind that grasps consciousness, sound, and a lamp is the object consciousness, and the mind that grasps them is its consciousness. Even though there is no consciousness, etc., two modes are established from the difference of the appearance of their aspects, namely, consciousness, sound, and lamps, etc. In its earlier commentary, it says: Consciousness, sound, etc., show that there is no appearance of an object, and therefore show that the mind itself is of two modes. The second part has four points: In order to establish the sign of simultaneous determination, first, the opponent is identified for the sake of debate; the nature of the sign to be established is identified; its mode is established.
