According to our own system, for the Sautrāntika school, there is no difference between the two. If a self-character and ultimate truth are true, then it is necessarily capable of functioning ultimately. Because if it is the latter, then it must also be both of the former. For the Mind-Only school, there is a difference between the two. If it is a self-character, then it does not necessarily follow that the ultimate truth is true, because other-dependence is a self-character, but it is not the truth of the ultimate. The fourth aspect has two parts: refutation and establishment. The first is: Some say that for the conceptualization of grasping at a mixture of place, time, and nature, things like variegated and yellow appear as a mixture of nature, like the part that exists in the east appearing to exist in the west, and like the part that exists in the morning appearing to exist in the afternoon. The meaning of unmixed is that the part that exists in the variegated does not exist in the yellow, the part that exists in the east does not exist in the west, and the part that exists in the morning does not exist in the afternoon. To this, others retort: The knowable must exist unmixed in place, time, and nature. Because the knowable that exists in the variegated does not exist in the yellow, the knowable that exists in the east does not exist in the west, and the knowable that exists in the morning does not exist in the afternoon. After refuting in this way, according to their own system, what exists in the variegated does not exist in the yellow, what exists in the east does not exist in the west, and what exists in the morning does not exist in the afternoon, that is the meaning of unmixed. This is not reasonable, because the knowable, by its nature, must exist unmixed in place, time, and nature. Because what exists in the variegated does not exist in the yellow, and so on. If it is not established, then the substance of the variegated, by its nature, must be so. Because of this reason. If it is not pervasive, then what exists in the variegated also exists in the yellow, which is wrong. If they say that the sign is attached to the nature of the subject, then the thing, by its nature, what exists in the variegated must not exist in the yellow. Because it exists unmixed in place, time, and nature. If you accept it, then accept it. Whatever exists in the variegated, exists in the yellow. Second, according to our own system, explaining the meaning of mixed and unmixed, and the two ways in which it is shown in the texts. The first is: The pot, by its nature, must exist unmixed in place, time, and nature, because your substance that exists in the east exists only in the east and not in the west, and your substance that exists in the conventional time

Because words that exist only in the time of designation do not exist in the time of non-designation, and because your substance that exists in a golden vase exists only in a golden vase and not in a silver vase. The meaning of mixing is that, for conceptual thought, it is a different exclusion that appears as distinct from non-vase things. You have the reason to say that object, time, and nature appear mixed, because the conceptual imputation that pervades both the eastern vase and the western vase, pervades both the vase of designation time and the vase of non-designation time, and pervades both the golden vase and the silver vase. Secondly, as it says, "Abiding in another, not moving from its own place," it directly shows that there is no common entity, and thus indirectly shows that the object is not mixed. As it says, "The meanings of the ultimate meaning are not different from themselves," and "The nature of variegated color does not exist in yellow," it shows that the nature is not mixed. As it says, "At that time, there is no self-characteristic," and "How can documents be sequential if they are not mixed with each other?" it shows that time is not mixed. These are directly shown, and indirectly show mixing, and especially, as it says, "Relying on different entities, the mind appears as one," and "That which is the opposite of not having results also exists in both," it shows both the object and the nature are mixed. As it says, "Although the appearances are different, they do this and that," it shows the mixing of time. As it says, "Because it exists in all opposites," it shows that all three are mixed. Fifth, regarding the basis of the self-characteristic, there are two aspects: refutation and establishment. First, some ancients say that all things are self-characteristics, otherwise it would be difficult to find the basis of self-characteristics. To this, others refute, saying that all things are subjects, and are not self-characteristics, because they are universals. After refuting in this way, they themselves believe that the coarse form in front of them is a self-characteristic, and it is divided into two types: coarse and subtle. First, although it is a self-characteristic, it is not the ultimate truth. Second, it is the indivisible subtle particle smaller than itself, which is both a self-characteristic and the ultimate truth. They say this. This is unreasonable, because it has already been refuted above that things are universals.
