The latter two sections are considered incidental. The third section has three aspects: the way it is taught in the scriptures and commentaries, the way it was examined by previous scholars, and identifying the valid aspect. The first aspect: In the sutra, it says, "When..." etc., and here it says, "Although external objects exist," and also, "Therefore, even for external objects to be measured," and, "The object is considered the very thing to be measured." These all indicate that external objects are the object to be measured. In the sutra, it says, "The very appearance as an object is the valid cognition of this," and here it says, "At that time, this very appearance of the object is the valid cognition." These all indicate that the apprehended aspect is the valid cognition. In the sutra, it says, "Or self-awareness is the result," and here it says, "One's own experience is the kind of result." These all indicate that self-awareness is the result. Considering this, Dharmottara said that the second way of the object here is that the object is the object to be measured, the apprehended aspect is the valid cognition, and self-awareness is the result. Some earlier Tibetans also considered that the directly stated valid cognition and result were just like this. However, the valid cognition and result considered by some later Tibetans do not appear in the scriptures. The second section has five aspects: the view of non-Buddhists, the view established by Dignāga and Dharmakīrti based on factual reasoning without being any of the four tenet systems, the view of only the Sautrāntika school, the view of the Cittamatra school, and the view that it is the view of both the Sautrāntika and Cittamatra schools. The first aspect: Some say that this third valid cognition and result is not a Buddhist tenet, but was established by the Cittamatrins in order to lead the Sautrāntikas. The way of leading is that they do not directly negate external objects, but negate the way that sense consciousness cognizes external objects, that is, they negate that the appearance to sense consciousness at its own time is given by external objects, thereby indirectly negating external objects. This is unreasonable. Then, what is the reason for not directly negating external objects? If external objects are negated, then it is not possible to lead the Sautrāntikas. If that is the case, then it is also unreasonable to directly negate that the appearance to sense consciousness at its own time is given by external objects, because the reason is the same. That kind of valid cognition and result, as a subject, it is also unreasonable that you, the maker, were established by the Cittamatrins in order to lead the Sautrāntikas, because you are also understood to be unreasonable by the Sautrāntikas, and also understood to be unreasonable by the Cittamatrins.

Ra. Both signs are acknowledged. The second is: Some believe that this third pramana-phala is not the view of any of the four Buddhist schools, but rather a pramana-phala established by Dignaga and Dharmakirti through the reasoning of reality. To this, Nyawon believes that it is not found in the scriptures of the four Buddhist schools. To this, Vajrahṛdaya, Āryadeva, Jetāri, Sahajavajra, Maitrīpa, Bodhibhadra, and others have said that this third phala-realization is detrimental to not being the view of any of those four. This statement refutes it. Furthermore, there is also the fault of accusing Dignaga and Dharmakirti, because the pramana-phala established by them through the reasoning of reality is not the view of any of the four Buddhist schools. The third is: Some believe that external objects are the object of measurement, and that after the appearance of the form of the object of apprehension, the consciousness that does not deceive it is pramana. If examined, it is self-awareness as the result, but if not examined, it is object-consciousness as the result. Furthermore, how is it established that the self-awareness as the result, which is the actual experience of what appears to oneself, is only the view of the Sautrāntikas, when the object of measurement and pramana are the same? Because external objects are made the object of measurement, it is not the view of the Cittamatrins. Because it is said that self-awareness is the result when examined, it is not the view of the Vaibhāṣikas and the Madhyamikas. Therefore, the view of the Sautrāntikas is naturally established. In the Ratnavali, it says: Here, this reason is not intended to negate external objects. Śāntideva, in the old commentary on "At that time, this appearance of meaning is," says: When self-awareness is also said to be the result for external objects in this way. Jñānaśrī says: In that way, after acknowledging external objects, one speaks of pramana and so on. Then, what is the difference between this and the first pramana-phala? There, the main thing is to negate pramana-phala as other substance, but here the main thing is to negate the Vaibhāṣikas' root consciousness not having the appearance of the object. That is what they think. However, it is somewhat unreasonable to apply it only to the Sautrāntikas, because this is the distinction between the pramana-phala of both the Sutra and Mind schools, whether examined or not. If it is only the view of the Sautrāntikas, then after the pramana-phala of object-consciousness is complete, before the pramana-phala of name-consciousness arises, there the arising consciousness of
