Therefore, even though the name "self-awareness" is applied to it, it is still characterized by self-awareness in its own essence. As expressed in the phrase "when the self is placed in the realm," it is because the Mimamsakas also acknowledge the measure of the characteristic of self-awareness. In short, if one understands that the appearance of what is grasped is true, which is the view of the Sutra school and the Vijnanavada school; and that in any case, neither the object nor the consciousness is true, which is the view of the Alikakara school, then when the appearance of what is grasped is taken as the object to be measured, there will be no confusion about the difference between the characteristic of self-awareness and the imputed name in the result. Now, those Alikakaras who claim that "if it is the appearance of what is grasped, then it must be consciousness," even if they strive until the end of the kalpa, will not understand this truth, and will also be confused about the difference between truth and falsehood. The second point is that both truth and falsehood hold that, conventionally, the blue that has become an external object is the object to be measured, and in the consciousness that arises from the stability of habit, the appearance of blue that appears clearly is the valid appearance of what is grasped. They believe that, conventionally, the external object blue is the manifest result of the consciousness of the object. To prove this, there are three ways: to prove it through scripture, to prove it through reasoning, and to explain the meaning of convention. First, in the *Examination of the Object*, it says: "The nature of the inner consciousness, whatever appears as external, that is because the nature of the object is the nature of consciousness, and that is also because it is the cause." The first two lines of this verse identify the basis for establishing the external object conventionally, and the word "nature of the object" indicates that it is considered the nature of the object conventionally. By "nature of consciousness," it indicates that for the object, consciousness is its own nature. The last line of the verse indicates that, conventionally, since the relationship of "if not, then not arising" is established, it is given the name of the objective condition. Similarly, in the *Establishment of Validity*, it says: "The existence of the object is the nature of self-awareness, therefore it is self-awareness, but from the result, this is considered to be object-consciousness." And in the *Commentary on Validity*, it says: "Because the establishment of the object is its nature, even though it is self-awareness, it is considered object-consciousness." The meaning of these words is that, conventionally, this sense consciousness that is considered object-consciousness, when it appears in itself, for the object, consciousness is its own nature, but because the result of this sense consciousness, namely the decisive wisdom, is in the mind of the external object, therefore it is considered an object conventionally.

The reason for saying "earth" is that it is the result of sense consciousness, namely, definitive cognition. As it is said in the Commentary on Valid Cognition, "When the cognitive aspect becomes the object, it is because it is established." And "That itself is the object, thus it is determined." These root texts and commentaries quoted earlier also show that in conventional terms, external objects are the objects to be measured. Summarizing the meaning of all these, the Auto-commentary on the Treatise on Reasoning says, "In conventional truth, like the Sautrāntikas, object-consciousness is the result of valid cognition, because establishing the object is its very nature. Although it is self-consciousness, it is also considered object-consciousness." In any case, it is a dual mode of mind. Thus it is said. Secondly, for all proponents of philosophical systems, there are two ways of establishing things: the way they are established in the face of reason when examining reality, and the way they are established according to how they are known in worldly conventions. Therefore, both of these are necessary here as well. When examining these with the two modes of mind and the reasoning that establishes self-consciousness, although it is refuted that the appearance to sense consciousness at its own time is an external object, in worldly conventions, that very thing is established as an external object. As it is said in the Commentary on Valid Cognition, "Because how the nature of the object is, just like that it abides in consciousness, this abides just like that, it is the nature of determination, namely, consciousness." Thus it is said. This very appearance to sense consciousness at its own time is what worldly people use to make conventions such as clean or unclean, blue or not blue, and so on. Therefore, it is known from the scriptures of the Commentary on Valid Cognition that this, which is an external object in conventional terms, also requires a consciousness with firm imprints. Thirdly, what then is the meaning of convention? For all those who have or have not entered a philosophical system, the definitive cognition brought about by the two valid cognitions that are common to all is established as the convention of definitive cognition, and the expressive sounds brought about by that definitive cognition are established as the convention of expressive sounds. Thus, the valid cognition brought about by such definitive cognition is established as the valid cognition of universal convention, which is clearly explained in the Commentary on Valid Cognition. The meaning of this is stated in the Treatise on Reasoning: "It appears just as it is, but even the words do not appear to other Tibetans, let alone the meaning!" If such a convention is recognized, then in the view of the Realists, if it exists in convention, it is not pervaded by existence, and in the view of the Madhyamikas, it is pervasive. This will also be understood as the difference between whether or not existence is admitted when examining reality with reason.
