Just as atoms are destroyed by the logic of combination. The noble teacher said: If a moment has an end, the beginning and the middle should also be examined. Because of the nature of having three moments, the world does not abide in a moment. If it is said that the mind, with its indivisible moment, is destroyed by this reasoning, it is not the same. If the three times arise simultaneously, then the present mind, although having the parts of the past and future, does not arise simultaneously in the three times. Therefore, the present mind does not have the parts of past and future objects, because past and future objects do not exist. And if atoms do not gather simultaneously, they do not form gross matter, and if they gather simultaneously, the central atom becomes divisible. If it is said that the present moment of consciousness is also the same, it is not so, because the indivisible moment of consciousness only arises in the present and does not have other parts. Then, doesn't the scripture of the noble one negate the indivisible moment of consciousness? It is not so, it refers to negating the view of the Hearers who believe that the three times are real, but it cannot negate the indivisible moment. Even if the present moment of consciousness is placed between the past and the future, it will not become having the parts of past and future objects. Although it is assumed by the mind to have parts, the meaning will not be destroyed because the Dharma is self-established. For example, although it is assumed that a vase is destroyed between two rabbit horns, the vase will not be destroyed because of it. Secondly, if it is said that there should be no difference between truth and falsehood in the case of a white conch and a yellow conch, because what appears there is consciousness, and the white conch and yellow conch that are different from that consciousness do not exist. The sense consciousness that holds those two should not have the difference between being mistaken and not being mistaken, because the objects of those two are equally false. Answer: There is no fault. The appearance as a white conch is the appearance of a mind with stable imprints, and the appearance as a yellow conch is the appearance of a mind with unstable imprints, so there is a difference between deceiving and not deceiving in name. Therefore, in terms of the two objects, truth and falsehood are established in name, and in terms of the two subjects, the distinction between valid and invalid is established in name. As it is said in the Compendium on Valid Cognition: The other, because of the stability of the imprints, is followed without separation until the end of samsara, and is not deceiving in name.

Therefore, here is valid cognition. This refers to the nature of universal convention, as it is said. Its meaning is stated in the "Treasury of Reasoning": "By the stability and instability of habituation, distinctions of truth and falsehood are made." Thus it is said. Secondly, if it is argued that distinctions such as days, months, years, and kalpas are not valid because there is no permanent substance established apart from moments, some answer this by saying that those are also moments, because they perish in the second moment of their own establishment. Therefore, regarding moments, the shortest duration of time is considered a moment, and not remaining in the second moment of its own establishment is considered a moment. From these two, the moment known is taken from the perspective of the former. Days and so on are taken from the perspective of the latter. Therefore, although those are entities, they are not ultimate entities. To say this is unreasonable, because if it is an entity, it has already precluded not being an ultimate entity. The response of our own system is that days and so on are merely continuously imputed as permanent by conceptual thought from the connection of many moments, therefore they are not established as substances, and there is no fault. Thirdly, if it is said that if there is an indivisible moment of consciousness, then the indivisibility of the parts of atoms is similarly established, it has already been shown that they are not the same. Furthermore, if it is argued that an indivisible entity exists, we accept it, because all entities encompassed by time, other than just being born now, have no indivisible past or future. Thirdly, regarding the actual valid results established by this, there are two types: the valid result of ultimate self-awareness and the valid result of conventional object-awareness. The first has two aspects: refutation and establishment. First, some say that consciousness itself is the object to be measured, the grasping aspect is the valid cognition, and self-awareness is the result. Others say that the previously appearing sense consciousness is a subject, it should be self-awareness, because it is a grasping aspect, because it is an aspect that arises from its own cause as the grasper of the object. If this is said, the aspect of the two moons appearing in the mistaken sense consciousness is a subject, it should be self-awareness, because it is a consciousness that arises from its own cause as the knower of the object. The pervasion is accepted. Also, the previously appearing sense consciousness is a subject, it should be a grasping aspect, because it is a distinction of consciousness. If this is said, all apprehended aspects are subjects, they should be grasping aspects, because they are of consciousness.
