I have said that, in the "Twenty Verses," it says: "For those with forms and other sense bases, it is said for those who are to be tamed, it is said according to their intention, like beings born miraculously." And also, in the "Sixty Stanzas on Reasoning," it says: "Due to necessity, the victorious ones, have taught 'I' and 'mine,' likewise, aggregates, elements, and sense bases, are taught due to necessity." Because it is said so. Second, refuting that valid cognition is the same as the object. Refuting by examining the place of similarity, refuting by examining the manner of similarity, and that similarity itself is not established, these three. The first is: If sense consciousness is the same as the external object, is the external object the same as atoms, or the same as grossness? If it is like the first, it is not reasonable, because the nature of atoms is subtle and exists in large numbers, while in sense consciousness, the appearance of a gross, round, and unified form arises. Because of which of those atoms, does it make it appear as such a gross appearance? Like this it is said. If it is like the second, is the gross the same as partless, or the same as having parts? If it is like the first, it is not reasonable, because partless grossness has already been refuted. If it is like the second, it is also not reasonable, because grossness with parts is not established as a substance, therefore it is not reasonable as its cause. The second is: If sense consciousness is the same as the external object, is it the same in all its essence, or the same in some parts? If it is like the first, sense consciousness will become material, because it is the same as it in all its essence. If it is the same in all its essence, then consciousness will no longer be consciousness. Like this it is said. If it is like the second, then the previously appearing sense consciousness will cognize yellow, because it is the same as it in some parts. If it is the same in some parts, then everything will experience everything. The third is: Similarity itself is not established, because the meaning of similarity must be established on the basis that the meaning previously cognized by valid cognition and the meaning seen later are regarded as similar, but previously there was no seeing of the external object. Third, refuting the realization of the object as the result. If sense consciousness knows the object, then by what is it established as realizing the object? Is it established by arising from the object? Is it established by similarity? Is it established by the combination of these two? Is it established by the combination of the ability to lead to certainty and the three? If it is like the first, then sense consciousness, as the subject, should become the cognition of the sense organ with form, because it arises from it. If it is like the second, then it has already been refuted. If it is like the third, then the second moment of the blue-grasping sense manifest consciousness, as the subject, grasping blue
