It (consciousness) is considered as the cause of creating images. If that is the case, then it contradicts the hidden for that consciousness. There is no reason to be established, because even if there are other causes, because there is no sensory consciousness. Different causes can be understood through inference. This passage is the reason for this school to establish external objects. Fourth, in order to dispel the doubts that arise at the time, it is examined whether it is necessary to manifest images in knowing objects. The examination is divided into two types: examining whether the self-character of knowing objects exists. First, some people believe that knowing objects requires the manifestation of the image of the object, because even in self-cognition, it is necessary to manifest the image of the consciousness that has become its own object. Otherwise, the sensory consciousness also does not manifest the image of its own object. For example, when two people, enemies and friends, look at the body of a person, that body is the common basis of beauty and ugliness. The eye consciousness of enemies and friends appears as beauty and ugliness, and both of them recognize it in a formless, naked way. If you say so, then, for the sensory consciousness that recognizes variegated colors, the rough image that appears as variegated colors should be multiple substances. Because the self-experiencing self-cognition appears as multiple substances, it is recognized in a formless, naked way. Also, the sensory manifestation that recognizes images, you should not have the difference of recognizing images without recognizing sounds, because for you, the images of the two do not appear the same. The grasping image of the eye consciousness, you should not have the difference that you recognize the grasped image of the eye consciousness, but do not recognize the grasped image of the ear consciousness, because for you, the images of the two do not appear the same. Therefore, knowing objects requires the manifestation of the image of the object, although the meaning of manifesting the image means that the state of having the image of the object is produced from its own cause, both the Sutra school and the Consciousness-only school think so, but for the sensory manifestation of recognizing blue having the blue image, the Sutra school believes that it comes from the external blue, while the Consciousness-only school believes that it comes from the power of habits, which is the difference. This is unreasonable, because the image of the grasped image that appears on the grasping image is the substance of the grasped image, or a different substance from it? If it is the former, then the grasping image, you should not have the image of the grasped image not appearing, if you have the image that appears, then

Because it must be the substance of the apprehended aspect. For example, the Vaibhashikas say that the reason why the blue aspect does not appear in the direct perception of blue apprehension is that the aspect appearing as blue is none other than the substance of the external object blue. According to the second view, it will be determined by the apprehended aspect. If that is also accepted, then the apprehending aspect and the apprehended aspect will fall into the fault of being cause and effect. Furthermore, does the aspect of the apprehended aspect appear or not appear in the apprehending aspect? If it appears, then the aspects will become infinite. If it does not appear, then the aspect of the apprehended aspect, as a subject, should appear your aspect in the apprehending aspect, because you are its object. The pervasion of this argument is accepted. Therefore, the statement that the perception of an object must manifest the aspect of the object is made with regard to the consciousness of other-knowing, and not with regard to all consciousnesses. Because the appearance of an aspect is divided into three: the appearance of an aspect determined from the object itself, the appearance of an aspect due to the power of habit, and the appearance of an aspect through the disturbance of one's own condition—the senses. The first is: only the direct perception of reality; the second is: all conceptual thoughts; the third is: the deluded sense consciousnesses. These should be understood. Regarding the second point, some analyze: if sense consciousness apprehends an object, are the sense consciousness and the external object simultaneous or not simultaneous? If they are simultaneous, then the sense consciousness cannot perceive the object, because the object has not done anything to the sense consciousness. Otherwise, everything would perceive everything. If they are not simultaneous, then when the sense consciousness exists, the object has already ceased, so it cannot apprehend; when the object exists, the sense consciousness has not yet arisen, so it cannot apprehend. If it can apprehend even without arising, then a rabbit's horn would also become an apprehender. Therefore, upon analysis, it is unreasonable for sense consciousness to apprehend an object. The establishment of subject and object, such as sense consciousness perceiving an object, also depends on action and agent, but the truth of action and agent is not established. The establishment of sense consciousness perceiving an object is named according to the common saying in the world, for example, when a son is born resembling his father, it is said that he has taken the father's appearance; similarly, when something arises resembling an object, it is said to perceive the object. Even if it is not self-made, it is established in that way because of its power. As it is said in the scriptures: "Though not self-made, it is established by its power." They think so.
