External objects are the hidden causes, and the consciousness with the appearance of external objects is considered the result. The third assertion is: grasping cognitions and non-conceptual erroneous cognitions do not exist as objects of appearance, and the subject is mistaken. The manifest appearance of non-conceptual grasping is established as an object, and the subject is not mistaken. Among them, the self-awareness direct perception that experiences consciousness, and the other-awareness direct perception that focuses on other objects, are the same in essence but different in aspect. For example, the sense direct perception that grasps blue, in relation to its own apprehended aspect, is also self-awareness direct perception as the experiencer, and in relation to blue, it is other-awareness direct perception as the object. Therefore, the object and experience of all consciousnesses are different. Being similar to the object is the object, and the clarity of oneself is the self-experience. So it is said. The fourth assertion is: external objects also have two types, gross and subtle. The gross is the conventional truth, because from the aggregation of particles with parts, to the projection of its own likeness onto the sense consciousness, it is then grasped as a single whole image, which is established as gross. The second is the ultimate truth, because the ability to generate sense consciousness resides in it. The fifth assertion is: external objects and the direct perception that realizes them as grasper and grasped are only nominally established, but not ultimately, because the two are cause and effect of producer and produced, so there is no connection in the ultimate sense. Therefore, sense consciousness does not directly grasp external objects, because external objects and sense consciousness do not directly touch. As it is said: external objects are not direct. The third is: this is what is related to the object, it is not other than the nature of the object. Therefore, what is to be measured that can be realized, the proof is the nature of what is to be measured. And, its nature is grasping, realizing the object. The words "what is to be measured" and "object" indicate what is to be measured, the words "nature of the object" and "nature of what is to be measured" and "nature of the object" indicate the valid cognition, and the words "what is to be measured that is realized" and "object that is realized" indicate the result. Considering this, Dharmakirti's object is what is to be measured, being similar to the object is the valid cognition, and realizing the object is the result.

It is said that "the first." There is no difference in what is measured, whether it is an external object, the color blue that has become an external object, the hidden part of blue, or blue itself. Here, when it is said that valid cognition is the nature of an object and the self of an object, it refers to the aspect that is given from the object itself, and it is not taken literally. In the case of the result, it is not appropriate to say things like "knowing the object to be measured" and "valid cognition that knows the object" literally, because those are only in inference. It is also unreasonable for valid cognition to actually realize the object as the result, because in the Sautrāntika school, sense consciousness does not actually realize the object. If manifest cognition that knows the object is taken as the result, then it is also unreasonable to establish a non-erroneous awareness that is free from conceptualization as valid cognition, because manifest cognition is the occasion for establishing the knowledge of the object, not the occasion for establishing manifest cognition as the proof. Therefore, the valid cognition and result here are: blue is the object to be measured, the consciousness that arises with the aspect of blue from the power of its own apprehended object, blue, is valid cognition, and manifest cognition that knows blue is the result. Here, it is assumed that any of the valid cognitions and results shown here are pervaded by object-knowing manifest cognition. According to the extent of the teachings of the texts, blue is the object to be measured, the object apprehended by the manifest cognition of the blue-perceiving sense, the valid cognition is that which arises with the aspect of blue from the power of blue, and the result is that the blue is known by the manifest cognition of the blue-perceiving sense. Third, refuting the arguments: Some say that if the manifest cognition of the blue-perceiving sense is the same as the hidden part of blue, then it is the same as a meat-eater. Answer: They are not the same, because the meaning of "same" here refers to the arising of an aspect, and in that case, the aspect of blue arises, but the aspect of a meat-eater does not arise. Some say that it is unreasonable for sense consciousness to be the same as the hidden part of an external object, because if the hidden part of an external object is not known by valid cognition, then the similarity cannot be known. If it is established by valid cognition, then is it established by manifest cognition or inference? It is unreasonable to establish it by the first (manifest cognition), because manifest cognition does not engage with the hidden. It is also unreasonable to establish it by the second (inference), because there is no correct reason to establish its (the hidden part of the external object) existence. Answer: That is unreasonable, because the meaning of the hidden part is not hidden, because the hidden
