If asked, what kind of action or result do these two valid cognitions have on these two objects of measurement, and does the determination of the number of valid cognitions depend on the determination of the number of objects of measurement? These two valid cognitions perform the function of cognizing these two objects of measurement. Namely, direct perception cognizes the own-character through its own nature, and inference cognizes the own-character through the mode of other-generality, and its object is established as a generality. As it says in the Pramāṇavārttika: 'Then, what is the result of this valid cognition? It is the cognition of the object of measurement.' This is consciousness, and it is also the result. 'Then, what is valid cognition? It is that from which, without interruption, the very accomplishment of this cognition of the object of measurement is achieved.' The chapter on direct perception shows that direct perception cognizes the own-character through its own nature. The chapters on self-benefit and other-benefit show that inference cognizes the own-character through the mode of other-generality. Among these, in the first case, what is the direct perception that cognizes? What is the own-character of the object to be cognized? What is the reason for it to cognize it? First, what is shown is the reasoning that establishes the absence of conceptualization in all four cases of direct perception, and those that show that apparent direct perception does not confuse the object. Second, what is shown is that in the case of sense direct perception, the establishment of a specific atom as the objective condition, and in the case of mental direct perception, the second moment of the object apprehended by sense direct perception is shown as the object apprehended, and in the case of self-awareness, the object to be experienced is established as consciousness, and in the case of yogic direct perception, the subject of the object is established as the true meaning. Third, what is shown are the treatises on the result of valid cognition, namely, 'Direct perception of object-kinds cognizes the own-character of the object, because it arises as its form,' which is the first treatise on the result of valid cognition, and 'Self-awareness direct perception cognizes the own-character of consciousness, because it arises as the nature of experiencing it,' which is the second treatise on the result of valid cognition. In the case of the first result of valid cognition, the consciousness that is established as cognizing the object by the reason of arising as the form of the object is also the very one that appears directly to oneself. Because consciousness is one's own nature, it is the self-awareness result for the object, namely, 'Even if the external object exists,' and so on. The result of valid cognition

Secondly, regarding the establishment of the three types of grasper, grasped, and manner of grasping as the three: valid cognition, result, and measurement, this is merely in the face of a deluded mind, the three types of grasper, grasped, and manner of grasping appear to be distinct, but in reality they are not distinct. As stated in treatises such as "Mind and its nature are inseparable." The second part has three sections: the necessity of explaining valid cognition and result; the actual valid cognition and result that have necessity; and the need to ascertain that very establishment. The first part has two sections: the necessity of determination and the necessity of elimination. The first part has two sections: the general necessity and the individual necessities. First, it is to refute the outsiders who believe that the agent and the object are different substances. Second, it is to refute some schools of our own and other traditions who believe that the sense consciousness does not manifest the aspect of the object, and who do not accept self-awareness. Therefore, refuting these two in order are the treatises on the first and second valid cognitions and results. Second, it is to show that the realization of the object to be measured is the nature of valid cognition, through the means of showing the proof that valid cognition understands the object to be measured. The second part has two sections: the general establishment of valid cognition and result, and the individual establishment of valid cognition and result. The first part has three sections: refuting the view that valid cognition and result are different entities, establishing the view that they are not different entities, and dispelling disputes about this. The first part has two sections: stating the view and refuting it. First, as it says in the Commentary on Valid Cognition, "Therefore, seeing and the connection of the senses, and those minds that are special." It directly shows valid cognition. Similarly, in the Jewel of Reasoning, it says, "Seeing and ascertainment are valid cognition and result, meeting and understanding the meaning are considered the result, the special one is said to be the special one, some consider sense consciousness to be valid cognition and result." It shows both valid cognition and result. Moreover, the outsiders believe that the agent and the object are different entities, that valid cognition and result are the producer and the produced, and that the aspect of the object does not appear in the mind. These three are similar. The difference that is not similar is that, compared to speculation, the non-conceptual consciousness that first observes the object is valid cognition, and the consciousness that subsequently clings to the characteristics of things, such as nature and type, is the result. It is also like this: "The one who first observes the object, is a non-conceptual consciousness, like the minds of children and mutes, pure, born from reality, therefore it is considered valid cognition. After that, any mind, in the nature of things, types, etc."
