It is not reasonable for great compassion and the wisdom that realizes emptiness to increase without limit through habituation, just as jumping does not increase without limit through habituation, water does not turn into fire when heated, and the melting of gold returns to its original state. For these three types of debate, there are also three types of answers: Compassion and so on arise in the mind through habituation, etc.; compassion arises from its own seed, etc.; and whatever is done becomes something that can return to its original state, etc. Secondly, although it is possible that through habituation these two may become the nature of the mind-stream, they are not omniscient, because the number of knowable things is infinite. If so, the answer to this is twofold: to prove omniscience by knowing all the necessary meanings, and to prove omniscience by relying on it to know all the meanings of knowable things. The first is, to teach those who do not understand, etc., which are four verses. The second is, in short, trustworthy words are not deceptive, and are inferred from the general characteristic. Here it says, the reality of what needs to be accepted and abandoned, etc. Nowadays, when omniscience, which knows all the necessary meanings, is proven by the logic of valid cognition, if one does not understand the key point of establishing that very basis as omniscience, which knows all the meanings of knowable things, and instead clings to the previous basis as a Bodhisattva on the path of seeing, then one has not turned one's mind towards the meaning of this treatise. The correct direct perception has been explained. Secondly, the opposite, apparent direct perception, has two aspects: definition and classification. The first is, erroneous consciousness. Secondly, there are two types: conceptual and non-conceptual apparent direct perception. The first has two aspects: definition and classification. The first is, some say that the definition of conceptual apparent direct perception is the clinging mind that clings to the mixture of sound and meaning, which is not understood, because it is necessary to explain the meaning of apparent direct perception based on conceptuality. The self-system is that conceptuality is erroneous consciousness. The second is divided into five types from the perspective of need, from the perspective of essence, from the perspective of the object of appearance, from the perspective of the way of clinging, and from the perspective of the manner of clinging. The first is, the author of the Sutra said, delusion and conventional consciousness, and inference arises from inference, and is called memory and manifest desire. Thus, six types of error are spoken of.

Erroneous consciousness is like mistaking a mirage for water, or a patterned rope for a snake. Conventional consciousness is like the conceptual thought that grasps the generality of a cow. Inference and that which arises from inference are considered in terms of relying on a sign. The former is the mind that grasps the sign, and the latter is inference possessing the sign, as stated by Gyalwang. Memory and aspiration are considered in terms of not relying on a sign. The former is the memory consciousness that remembers past events, and the latter is the thought that aspires to future events. The way these are summarized into three by glorious Dignāga is as follows: for conventional consciousness, it is said to be conceptual thought that relies on conventions; for erroneous consciousness, it is said to be conceptual thought that imputes meaning onto other things; and for the latter four, it is said to be conceptual thought that has hidden meaning. The necessity of showing these as appearing like direct perception is that the first two have the wrong view of being considered sense consciousness by the logicians, so they are shown in order to dispel that. The latter four are not direct perception, and even outsiders acknowledge that. However, the first two are for the sake of establishing a similar example to prove that they are not sense consciousness, because in order to establish that they are not born from sense, it is said that the two are shown because of seeing error. Secondly, there are two types: ascertainment and imputation, which have already been explained. Thirdly, the ancients divided it into three: grasping only the sound universal, grasping only the meaning universal, and grasping both the sound and meaning universals. The first is like the conceptual thought that grasps the sound universal in the mindstream of a person who is not familiar with conventions. The second is like the conceptual thought that grasps the meaning universal in their mindstream. The third is like the conceptual thought in the mindstream of an elderly person who is familiar with conventions. Although this is said, if these are conceptual thoughts, then it does not cover grasping the mixture of sound and meaning, so it has already been refuted. Therefore, if we divide it from the aspect of the object that appears, like the inference that understands sound to be impermanent, it can be divided into the mind that eliminates others and is not mistaken, and like the conceptual thought that grasps sound as permanent, it can be divided into the mind that eliminates others and is mistaken. Fourth, there are conceptual thoughts such as grasping one as one, grasping different as different, dividing one into many, and combining many into one.
