It is held that only scriptural authority can establish mental direct perception, and not the direct perception of the power of things. As it says in that (treatise): 'The term of the name that is extremely famous in the established limit is to show that the mental direct perception is extremely famous in the established limit. In order to establish mental direct perception, one should not seek other valid cognitions.' This is what is to be shown. If asked: How are the divisions of direct perception established? If mental direct perception exists, then this is its definition. The author of the sutra, in order to refute the debate made against the commitment of what is extremely famous in the established limit, says in the sutra: 'Monks, the knowledge of form is of two kinds, namely, relying on the eye and the mind.' Only these can establish it. The great Brahmin says: 'First, only one moment of sense direct perception arises, and after that, until the continuum of sense direct perception is exhausted, sense direct perception and mental direct perception arise in equal numbers. Sense direct perception arises from its similar preceding one, so it has a continuum. Mental direct perception does not arise from its similar preceding one, but arises directly from the causal sense direct perception, so it has no continuum. At that time, when looking outward, there are two ways of knowing objects, and when looking inward, there is one way of self-knowing, so it is considered that there are three ways of direct perception.' Thus, among the three systems, the view of the nature of mental direct perception of the Ornament school is unreasonable. If mental direct perception makes the object appear in front, and sense direct perception cannot do so, then does the meaning of making the object appear in front refer to the appearance of the object? Or does it refer to the function of determining the object? If according to the former, if it is the appearance of the formless and naked (object), then it is prohibited by the Sautrantika school. If it is the appearance of the form given by the object, then it is the same for sense direct perception, because for sense direct perception, there is also the appearance of the form given by the object. If according to the latter, then mental direct perception, which is a subject of dharma, should be an imputation, because it is a consciousness that performs the function of determining the object. It is also unreasonable for sense direct perception and mental direct perception to arise alternately in equal numbers, because in the case of equal numbers and no continuum, the difference in the ease of determination and the ability to lead to the determination of the object is unreasonable. Furthermore, the three causes of the first moment of sense direct perception directly produce their result, sense direct perception.

Therefore, the three conditions of the sensory perception that occur simultaneously with it should necessarily not produce the difference of the sensory perception as its own result, because the mental perception arises immediately after the first moment of the sensory perception, and the difference of the sensory perception not arising is necessarily valid. It is not possible to accept this, because it is the direct cause of the sensory perception as its own result. It is pervasive, saying: "What result can prevent the cause that is without deficiency?" Therefore, secondly, regarding Chokyi's assertion, among the two aspects of the essence being unreasonable and the manner of arising being unreasonable, the first is: the three conditions of mental perception and the manner of arising should necessarily not be established by direct valid cognition, because mental perception is not established by direct valid cognition. If it is said that those are also established only by scriptural valid cognition, it is unreasonable, because even if it is permissible for the three conditions to be established by scriptural valid cognition, it is not established that the pure scripture shows the manner of mental perception arising constantly. Furthermore, in the presence of non-Buddhist ear-piercers, mental perception should necessarily not be established by valid cognition, because in their presence, it is not established by direct valid cognition, nor is it established by scriptural valid cognition. The first reason is accepted, and the second is established, because they do not accept the scriptures that show mental perception as scriptural valid cognition. Secondly, is it only the mental perception that holds the last moment of the lamp that arises and the sensory perception does not arise? Or is it the opposite of that? Do the two arise simultaneously? Or does the mental perception arise at the end of the sensory perception that holds it? According to the first, it is unreasonable, saying: "Like this, the destruction of lamps and so on that are unrelated to the later arising of infants without signs is completely eliminated by seeing." Therefore, and because the three conditions of the lamp are complete at the time of the last moment of the lamp. According to the second, if the lamp and the sensory perception that holds it become the sensory perception that holds the lamp, which causes the continuum to be cut off, then it is necessarily pervasive that mental perception does not arise at the end of its own continuum being cut off, because of having promised that. If accepted, it contradicts the mental perception arising at the end of the sensory perception's continuum being complete. According to the third, it contradicts the assertion that all consciousnesses of bright objects in the state of having the eye faculty are eye consciousnesses. According to the fourth, the mental perception that holds the last moment of the lamp,
