Adding, it becomes seven, because through attention, it is determined as two types: self-knowing and other-knowing. Third, refuting arguments, there are three types: refuting the arguments of non-Buddhists, refuting the arguments of those who connect, and refuting the arguments of Tibetans. The first is: What was previously experienced is when grasping. Etc., should be understood from the meaning of the treatise. The second is: There is no fault in speaking to the adorned, because mental direct perception does not perform the function of determining the object, nor does it arise alternately. There is no fault in speaking to Dharmottara, because it arises when the continuum of sensory perception is not complete, but does not arise at the end of the complete continuum. When one has the function of the eye, if all consciousnesses with clear appearances are not object-perceiving consciousnesses, then it would be a fault of not finding the characteristics of eye consciousness, so there is no fault. Otherwise, when one has attention, if all consciousnesses with clear appearances are not mental direct perception, then it would be the same fault of not finding the characteristics of mental direct perception, and when a clear appearance appears to eye consciousness, then the clear appearance in samadhi would also not exist. In the third aspect, there are four: refuting the fault that the term "three modes" is unreasonable, refuting that similar types of consciousness cannot arise simultaneously, refuting that one cause cannot simultaneously produce many different types of results, and refuting that there is no difference between determinate cognitions that lead or do not lead. The first is: Nyawönpo said, the term "three modes" is unreasonable, just as looking outward has two modes of object-awareness, looking inward also has two modes of self-awareness that experience those two, so it would become four modes. Just as those two are one in self-awareness when looking inward, those two are also one in object-awareness when looking outward, so it would become two modes. If so, then the division of direct perception into four is also unreasonable, sensory, mental, and yogic direct perception, those three are three self-awarenesses that experience them, so it would become six. If those three are one in self-awareness, then the previous three are one in object-awareness, so it would become two modes. Therefore, in this view, at that time, except for yogic direct perception, the three direct perceptions mentioned in the chapter on direct perception arise simultaneously, so direct perception among the four direct perceptions.

It means having the complete movement of three-three, but generally it is not necessarily three movements. If considering the movements of object, condition, etc., it is also said to be five or seven. Second: It should follow that multiple cognitions of the same type arise simultaneously in the continuum of one person. Because sense consciousness and mental consciousness arise simultaneously. Answer: There is no fault. Because the co-emergent condition of the two is the sense organ with form and the mental faculty, so they are not of the same type. Then, multiple cognitions of the same type of mental consciousness will arise simultaneously, because five mental consciousnesses arise simultaneously. If accepted, it contradicts the statement that "sentient beings are each a continuum of consciousness." Answer: There is no fault. The meaning of the scripture is that multiple constant mental consciousnesses do not arise simultaneously in the continuum of one person. Because mental consciousness does not have constancy. Third: It is unreasonable for the first moment of sense consciousness and the first moment of mental consciousness to simultaneously produce the second moment of sense consciousness. Because the two are of different types. Fruits of different types do not arise from one cause. Answer: There is no fault. Because one mental intellect can serve as the proximate cause for both non-conceptual sense consciousness and conceptual mental intellect. Fourth: If from the second moment of sense consciousness onwards, the number of sense consciousness and mental consciousness are equal, then there will be no difference between the two in terms of whether or not they can lead to certainty. In response to this, the Root Treasury says: Sense arises from the sense organ with form, therefore sense consciousness has a continuum. Mental faculty does not arise from the mental faculty, therefore it does not have a continuum. And in its self-commentary it says: Because the later moment of the sense organ with form arises from the earlier moment of the sense organ with form, although it is not permanent like the continuum of non-Buddhists, there is a continuous continuum of similar types arising without interruption. The mental faculty is only the moment when the previous sense consciousness has just ceased, because the mental faculty does not arise from other mental faculties, so there is no continuum. Therefore, ordinary beings cannot connect, so they cannot determine from themselves. Regarding the meaning of what was said, some people, according to the literal meaning, consider that the mental faculty not producing the mental faculty is the view of the Root Treasury, and based on this...
