In terms of being its dominant condition, and in terms of generating experience as clear awareness, it is established as the immediately preceding condition. As it says in the Pramāṇavārttika, "Sense consciousness arises from the immediately preceding condition." Here also, it says, "Therefore, the consciousness of the senses has the characteristic of arising from the immediately preceding condition." Having thus identified the immediately preceding condition, because recognizing its immediately preceding condition is equivalent to recognizing the dominant condition, there is no separate treatise that explains the dominant condition. Third, when sense consciousness does not arise from a single moment, mind consciousness does not arise; when sense consciousness arises continuously, mind consciousness also arises in equal number with the sense consciousness from the second moment onwards. At that time, the objective condition of mind consciousness is not the apprehended object of the first moment of sense consciousness, because that has already passed during the time of the immediately preceding condition of mind consciousness. Because, as it says, "The object that has passed in a moment, the seer does not exist." Therefore, the similar type of apprehended object of the first moment of sense consciousness, which is the second moment, is the apprehended object of both the first moment of mind consciousness and the second sense consciousness. Because it acts as the objective condition, and the first moment of sense consciousness acts as the dominant condition and the immediately preceding condition, the first moment of mind consciousness arises. Also, it acts as the objective condition, and the colored sense organ simultaneous with the first moment of sense consciousness acts as the dominant condition, so the second moment of sense consciousness arises. In short, as it says in the Sutra, "Mind also with the object." In the Pramāṇavārttika, it says, "Mind also cognizes that object as its immediately preceding condition." Here also, it says, "Mind is what cognizes other objects." Second, in terms of determining the nature, there are three points: the manner of arising, establishing it as valid cognition, and examining the state of arising. The first point is: after the five sense consciousnesses cease, do the five mind consciousnesses arise simultaneously or not? If they do not arise, then the difference in the result cannot be established from the difference in the cause; if they arise, then there will be the fault of one person's continuum having multiple continuums. If they arise in this way, there will be no fault of one person's continuum having multiple continuums, because it is encompassed by one continuum of self-awareness internally. Otherwise, when the five sense consciousnesses and conceptual thought arise simultaneously, there will be the fault of one person's continuum having multiple continuums.

Then, if it is said that sentient beings each have their own stream of consciousness, does this contradict what you said? There is no contradiction. Because when looking inward, it is a single self-aware continuum. Second, mental direct perception is valid cognition because it grasps knowledge that is not mistaken about true objects. However, it cannot generate certainty on its own like other direct perceptions because it lacks continuity. Therefore, in worldly terms, it is not called valid cognition. For example, even if the object of sense consciousness is an atom, it is not referred to as an object in terminology. Third, record the various explanations of Indian scholars and identify the reasonable view. This includes three aspects: debate, establishment, and refutation. First, in the first aspect, Jñānaśrī says: Due to habit, for what is in front, the cognition of 'what is this' etc. arises, and in order to make it manifest, it is considered mental direct perception. That is, mental direct perception has three characteristics: the cognition of 'what is this' that makes what is in front manifest through habit, arising from the mental faculty, and appearing clearly. The process of arising is: first, sense direct perception arises for one moment, then mental direct perception arises for one moment, then the second moment of sense direct perception arises, and so on. It is grasped by sense direct perception at the beginning and determined by mental direct perception at the end. Some say that it is unreasonable to list this as Jñānaśrī's view in the commentary on the Pramāṇavārttika, because it is not explained in Jñānaśrī's commentary. But this is not considered a mistake, because it is a record of Jñānaśrī's view from the oral instructions of the lineage of gurus, not a record of what is explained in the commentary. Dharmottara believes that a moment of mental direct perception arises only after the continuum of sense direct perception has ended, not before. Because in the state where the eye is in contact with form, all clearly appearing knowledge is eye consciousness. Otherwise, it would be difficult to find the definition of eye consciousness. The smaller Dharmottara says: The consciousness of mind also becomes manifest when the function of the eye has ceased. When the eye has function, all cognition of form depends solely on the eye. If it were not so, then some consciousness would not depend on the eye. He also said so.
