is the condition for that. Secondly, regarding the condition for sense direct perception, from the perspective of the object, there are the five objects such as form; from the perspective of the subject, there are two types of conditions: the condition for sense direct perception and the condition for mental direct perception. Should these be established as gross or subtle? Regarding this, there are two approaches: listing the explanations of previous scholars and identifying the reasonable side. The first is: Some say that external objects are divided into indivisible particles and the gross objects composed of them. The first is not a condition for sense direct perception because it cannot impart an image to it; the second can impart an image, so it is a condition. Because by what means do those particles make it appear as such a gross appearance? This shows that the sense consciousness appears as a gross image, and the image must be imparted by the gross. Furthermore, the condition for sense direct perception is gross, because the sense consciousness unerringly apprehends the gross. This is pervasive, because minds are of various natures, and things are also of various natures. So they say. Again, some say that a special particle is the condition for sense direct perception, because "all hands, etc., are false." etc., negates that the gross is composed of parts, and the Ornament Sutra also considers the parts to be ultimately true and the whole to be conventionally true. "If there is something other than the special, then establishing the thesis becomes establishing the proof." Because the gross whole is said to be an imputed conventionality. The special particle can impart a gross image to the sense consciousness, because "by what means do those particles make it appear as such a gross appearance?" This shows that the sense consciousness appears as a gross image. So they say. Again, some scholars say that a special particle is the condition for sense consciousness, and it also imparts the image of a particle to the sense consciousness. The meaning of the special is that the particles that exist separately without being connected to other particles cannot impart an image, so they are not special. When existing adjacent to other particles, the previous moment of oneself acts as the immediate cause, and the previous moment of other particles acts as the concurrent assisting condition, thereby producing a particle that can impart an image to the sense consciousness, which is the special one.

Yes. Because it imparts the form of particles to sensory consciousness, sensory consciousness perceives the form of individual particles, not the gross form. This is because the gross is merely an imputation of a single, undifferentiated entity by subsequent conceptual thought that has not grasped the details. Thus it is said. The second point is: grossness other than particles is not the objective condition of sensory consciousness, because grossness other than particles has been repeatedly refuted by Dharmakīrti. Particles are also divided into solitary particles without similar companions and particles with dissimilar companions. The first is not the objective condition of sensory consciousness, because it has not produced a special particle capable of imparting form. For the latter, merely being adjacent to other similar particles does not make it the objective condition of sensory consciousness. Rather, when similar particles gather to the point where they can generate self-grasping sensory consciousness, each indivisible particle of that aggregate is the objective condition of sensory consciousness, because it has produced a special particle capable of imparting form to sensory consciousness. Although the objective condition of sensory consciousness is a particle, it requires a special particle. Considering that a particle that is not special is not the objective condition of sensory consciousness, it is said in the sutra: The five aggregates of consciousness have accumulation as their object. In the Compendium of Abhidharma (Asaṅga's Abhidharmasamuccaya) it says: Because it is produced by many meanings, it is the object of the general characteristic of itself. This means that because it is produced by many substances, it is said that one's own birthplace is the object of the general characteristic, not that one recognizes no difference from different things. Vasubandhu said: These are the objects of the self-characteristic of the birthplace, not the self-characteristic of the substance. Similarly, the basis and object of these five aggregates of consciousness are accumulation. Therefore, the subtle particle is invisible, so it is unspeakable. Here it also says: Therefore, the sensory object is not a particle, because it is known, it is not definite in one. Thus it is said. The meaning of a special particle has already been explained, and a non-special particle is a particle.
