Even if many are gathered, they cannot generate sense consciousness, so it is not necessarily referring to each individual atom. Although atoms are the objective condition for sense consciousness, what sense consciousness apprehends is the gross appearance, not the appearance of atoms. This is because the gross appearance appears to sense consciousness, while the appearance of atoms does not. If one thinks that the gross is imputed by conceptual thought and therefore should not appear to sense consciousness, then that is very true, but the gross appearance and the gross are not the same thing. The former is the apprehended aspect, while the latter is an imputation. Second, there are three types of mental direct perception: identifying the essence, determining the nature, and refuting disputes. The first is divided into two: examining the definition and classification, and examining the three conditions. In the first, some say that the definition of mental direct perception is: a non-conceptual, non-erroneous awareness that arises from its own uncommon dominant condition, the mental faculty. If classified, it is divided into object-cognizing mental direct perception and self-cognizing mental direct perception. The definitions in order are: a non-erroneous knowledge of other minds and a knowledge of self-awareness that arises from its own uncommon dominant condition, the mental faculty. If the first is classified, it is divided into the five types of form-apprehending mental direct perception, etc. The second includes the direct perception of knowing others' minds and the self-awareness direct perception experienced by mental direct perception, and so on. To establish this, it is said: the direct perception of knowing others' minds is mental direct perception because it is the common basis of mental consciousness and direct perception. This is not reasonable, because the direct perception of a trainee yogi is such a case. Therefore, the sense direct perception of a trainee should be yogic direct perception because it is the common basis of the knowledge and direct perception of a yogi. The pervasion is accepted. If it is sense direct perception, it is because of the uncommon cause. Its name is made by the sense faculty. Because it is directly shown from that point, it is not pervasive. If it is mental direct perception, the mind is also with meaning, because it is directly shown at that time, so it is not pervasive. The sign is accepted. Our own position is: the definition of mental direct perception is: a non-conceptual, non-erroneous awareness that arises directly from its own uncommon dominant condition and the immediately preceding condition, the mental faculty, and possesses an object to be apprehended. If classified, it is divided into the five types of form-apprehending mental direct perception, etc.

Secondly, there are three: the self-cause, the immediately preceding cause, and the objective cause. The first has two aspects: a general explanation of the self-cause of the mind's consciousness, and a specific explanation of the self-cause of mental manifestation. The first is: According to the view of the eight aggregates of consciousness, it is considered to be the afflicted mind (nyon yi). As it is said in the Sutra of the Dharma Collection, "Consciousness arises from the mind," and in the Compendium, "Consciousness relies on the mind," and in the Mahāyānasaṃgraha, "Similar to the five." This means that just as the five sense consciousnesses each have their own unique self-cause, the mind's consciousness also needs a unique self-cause, and therefore it must be the afflicted mind. According to the view of the six aggregates of consciousness, the six aggregates themselves are the self-cause of the mind's consciousness. Because, "In order to perfectly establish the basis of the sixth, the eighteen elements are posited." This means that in order to establish the unique self-cause of the sixth, the mind's consciousness, the six aggregates of consciousness are unified as the mind element, and therefore the eighteen elements are explained. The meaning of "immediately preceding" in the upper and lower Abhidharma has already been explained. Even according to the view of the seven aggregates of consciousness, in the absence of the afflicted mind, it must be considered the unique self-cause of the mind's consciousness. Otherwise, it would follow that in the stage of the supramundane path, the mind's consciousness would not have a unique self-cause. With this in mind, the Compendium of Topics states that the mind has two aspects: the afflicted mind and the immediately preceding sixth. The second is: When sense consciousnesses arise continuously, the five sense consciousnesses are the unique self-cause of mental manifestation. Because, if it is mental manifestation, it must be mental manifestation that apprehends objects, and the mind's consciousness cannot be the unique self-cause of mental manifestation that apprehends objects. Because its immediately preceding cause and self-cause are the same entity. Moreover, it is explained in both the Commentary on Valid Cognition and the Treatise on Certainty that the immediately preceding cause is the sense consciousness itself. Secondly, as mentioned above, the sense consciousness that has become the self-cause of mental manifestation can generate the object-apprehending capacity of mental manifestation.
