Thus it is. Therefore, without separating the two, for the meaning of sound, the collection of meanings mistaken as self-character is the basis for what is to be established, because the meaning of sound is actually refuted and established by means of the mind's assumption of self-character. That is to say, when it is said that the collection of meanings of sound and impermanence is the basis for what is to be established, this sound also does not separate the meaning of sound and self-character, and this impermanence also does not separate the meaning of sound and self-character. If they were separated, it would become that the collection of meanings of the sound of sound and the meaning of the sound of impermanence is what is to be established, or the collection of meanings of the self-character of sound and the self-character of impermanence is what is to be established, and for that, there would be the faults as mentioned before. By this example, when it is said that the sound 'vase' expresses a vase, both what is expressed and what expresses are also not separated from the meaning of sound and self-character, otherwise it would become only the expressed and what expresses of the actual thing, or only the expressed and what expresses of attachment. Understanding this is very important. Third, there are two types of refutation that harm the thesis: general classification and individual nature. First, there are three aspects: definition, classification and summary, and refuting arguments. The first is: the contradiction of being able to directly refute it is established by the mere assertion itself. For example, if sound is permanent, you have that definition, because without considering the faults of your proof and example, etc., the impermanence of sound can directly refute your side, so you have become a pseudo-thesis. That is established because the impermanence of sound is directly contradictory to you, and that is established by the valid cognition of the power of reality. This is to say that the following should also be understood in the same way. Some say that the basis of refutation by valid cognition is not established, so the relationship between definition and defined is not valid, which is simply because they do not understand the classification of other-exclusion of non-existence, just as for phenomena that are established as entities, affirmation and negation are applied to the meaning of sound, so too for non-entities, affirmation and negation are applied to the meaning of sound in the same way.

The reasons and necessities for combining the commitment of "having the ability to express," etc., and the two, self-contradiction and reliance contradiction, into one called reliance contradiction, have all been explained. Here, too, if we explain it based on that, contradictions can be determined to be four, because from the perspective of the object, inference can be divided into three. Inference has two types: one that is established by acknowledging the pervasion of the sign, and one that is established by the power of things. The former can also be divided into two types: one that is committed to by oneself, and one that is committed to by everyone. If we summarize them, they can be summarized into two types: contradiction of the power of things and contradiction of commitment. Direct perception and inference by the power of things are the valid means of the power of things, while the latter two are merely assumed to arise from or have the same nature as them through commitment, so their contradictions are also established as contradictions of commitment. Third, just as the contradiction of inference is divided into three, the contradiction of direct perception can also be distinguished, thus becoming six. If someone says that, for the so-called "non-dual moon," refutation is done by committing to the appearance of the dual moon as direct perception, and there is also the contradiction of direct perception that holds the unspeakable as speakable, and there is also the contradiction of fame's direct perception, then this is not the case, because for the appearance of the dual moon, which is not direct perception, refutation is done by committing to it as direct perception, which is a contradiction of inference based on the fruit-sign reasoning that infers the form of things from language, and the unspeakable direct perception cannot be established, so the contradiction of fame's direct perception is also unreasonable. Second, the respective natures have two aspects: explaining the contradiction that harms the nature of the dharma, and explaining the contradiction that harms the differences of the dharma, etc. The first, in short, "Direct perception, meaning, and inference, reliance, fame, self-reliance." Thus, the root and commentary explain four contradictions: the contradiction of direct perception, the contradiction of inference by the power of things, the contradiction of reliance, and the contradiction of fame. First, the definition of the contradiction of direct perception is: at the very moment of making the proposition, the contradiction that can actually refute it is established by the power of experience, for example, when proposing "sound is not audible," it is like the meaning that is grasped itself. The way to establish it should be understood by referring to the former, and in the Pramāṇavārttika, "Harm
