That is, it is a characteristic of a part. That is to say, for what can become an object of verbal expression, it is necessary that it is not refuted by valid cognition. As it says in the Commentary on Valid Cognition, "Essence, word, conjunction, self, four characteristics, with words, those are the four characteristics." Separating the first four parts mentioned in the Sutra, and taking that as the thesis, that is the characteristic of the subject. As it says in the Door to Reasoning, it is included in the commitment to the thesis. And both of those, for what can become a correct object, it is also necessary that it is not refuted by valid cognition. That is to say, the commitment also needs to be valid cognition, that is, "Speech without obstruction is valid cognition." And so on, in the way explained by the scriptures. Also, in the auto-commentary, when quoting the Door to Reasoning scripture, there is only the sentence "The desired thesis is the subject," and nothing else. According to the way of saying that there are five kinds depending on the separate refutations, and one kind depending on the total refutation, all five kinds of the Sutra are also included in the one kind of the Door to Reasoning. In this way, the characteristic of the correct subject seems to be what can be committed to as the thesis. In the auto-commentary itself, it says, "Unrefuted means not joining the four refutations." "Its separate refutations, that is, joining the four refutations, cannot be committed to as the thesis, that is, refuting that." And, "However, understanding the meaning of the collection that the characteristic of the thesis can establish is called understanding the thesis." In this way, it is understood. In this way, in the Commentary on Valid Cognition, separating the four characteristics is done for the sake of explaining together with the removal of doubts of the unrefuted Door to Reasoning. The sound of essence, word, and conjunction. And so on, with one verse, it explains the way of eliminating the non-pervasion and over-pervasion of the five characteristics, with the sentence "Commitment to the thesis is the characteristic of the subject," because it already includes the meaning that can be established, so the previous five kinds are also included in the one kind of the Door to Reasoning. For what is refuted by valid cognition that is not in accordance with reason, because it is harmed by valid cognition, it does not possess the meaning that can be established. And for the other four kinds, because they do not possess the meaning that can be committed to as the thesis, the last three sentences explain this. In this way, what can be committed to as the thesis is also not refuted by valid cognition. Because what is refuted by valid cognition cannot be committed to as the thesis. That is what is explained by "The commitment also needs to be valid cognition," and so on. It is very consistent with the previously quoted scripture of the auto-commentary.

May it be a feast for those fortunate ones who possess both wisdom and merit. If either is lacking, there is a risk of not attaining it. Third, regarding these, there are three points to refute disputes. First, refuting non-pervasiveness: It is not pervasive in the case of the proponent's own sake, because there is no commitment. If it is said so, there is no fault, because even if there is no actual commitment at that time, since the proof is sudden, the thesis is also naturally considered sudden, therefore it is an implicit commitment. Second, refuting over-pervasiveness: It is too broad for a commitment that is not timely, for example, when asked whether sound is permanent or impermanent, committing to the statement that the mountain has fire also becomes something to be established. If admitted, then it becomes a place that is not for refutation. If one commits to the thesis, then it is the thesis, but refuting from other aspects is not contradictory. Third, refuting similarity to the sign: Just as a thesis requires commitment, why doesn't the sign also require commitment? They are not the same, if the three aspects are established, even without commitment, it becomes a sign; if not established, even with commitment, it does not become a sign. But for the thesis, it is established by the sign after direct or indirect commitment. In short, according to the Sutra perspective, the definition of a correct thesis or subject is that it possesses the five qualities such as the meaning of the entity and is to be shown by the sign. According to the Reason Gate perspective, it is something that can be committed to as a thesis. If divided, there are two types: the correct thesis for one's own sake and the correct thesis for the sake of others. The order of the definitions is: What was not taken as a thesis by the previous opponent for the sake of the later opponent, and what was taken as a thesis, at the end, the meanings of the two treatises are listed separately. The meanings of the two treatises are not completely different, because they are merely eliminating misperception and dissimilarity, or merely eliminating dissimilarity, or depending on particularity, or merely depending on generality. Second, identifying the instances: So, are the instances of the thesis the collection meaning of the self-character of dharma and the subject of dharma, or the collection meaning of conceptualization? It is not the collection meaning of conceptualization, because negating and affirming the meaning of sound alone does not change the understanding of the self-character. Nor is it the collection meaning of objects, because one cannot directly negate and affirm the self-character.
