And, there are two types of inconclusive reasons with remainder. The definition of the first: a common inconclusive reason, which is seen by the debater who uses it as a reason in both the similar and dissimilar classes. There are four types: seeing it as pervasive in both classes; pervasive in the similar class, and seeing two possibilities in the dissimilar class; pervasive in the dissimilar class, and seeing two possibilities in the similar class; and seeing it as partial in both classes. For example: Sound, the subject, is impermanent, because it is measurable; and, it is produced by effort, because it is impermanent; and, it is not produced by effort, because it is impermanent; and, it is permanent, because it is not tangible. Like these examples. The meaning of seeing two possibilities in the similar class here is, it is made with the intention that the Vaisheshika school accepts the atoms of the four great elements as permanent, and accepts tangible things as the similar class. The definition of the second is: whichever is seen by the debater who uses it as a reason in either the similar or dissimilar class, and not seen in the other. There are two types: correct remainder and contradictory remainder inconclusive reasons. The definition of the first: an inconclusive reason with remainder, which is seen by the debater who uses it as a reason in the similar class, and not seen in the dissimilar class, but it is not certain that it does not exist in the dissimilar class. There are three types: existing in the dissimilar class but not seen; not existing but not contradictory; contradictory but uncertain. For example: The speaker, the opponent, the subject, is not omniscient, because he speaks. This person looking outwards, the subject, is blue, because he is the son of Devadatta. For the debater who is uncertain about the contradiction between being made and being permanent, sound, the subject, is impermanent, because it is made. The definition of the second: whichever is seen by the debater who uses it as a reason in the dissimilar class, and not seen in the similar class, but it is not certain that it does not exist in the similar class. There are three types: existing in the dissimilar class but not seen; not existing but not contradictory; contradictory but uncertain. These three cases are the reverse of the established property of the previous three cases. Also, the reason for establishing the inconclusive reason in general as having remainder is that it has a remainder of doubt about what is to be established, therefore it is called having remainder.
