The reason for saying that this is not a fault is that the previous use of the sign of sleeping to prove that all trees have consciousness is the intention of the proponent, so it is a fault that it is not established in one aspect of the subject. And this use of the sign of effort-born to prove that all sounds are impermanent is not the intention of the proponent, so it is obvious that it is not a fault that it is not established in one aspect of the subject. The second case is that the three characteristics (हेतुत्रैरूप्य, hetutrairūpya, the three aspects of reason) are the subject, and the correct reason is that it can represent the correct reason. When writing like this, it is as if each of the three characteristics is not established. The reason for saying that there is no fault here is that the proponent wants to argue that all three characteristics are assembled together, not to argue for each individual three characteristics, so it is obvious that it is not a fault that each individual three characteristics is not established. In the second case, when the class generality is taken as the sign and the collection generality is taken as the sign, there are two identical cases. In the first case, the similarity between establishment and non-establishment is that if only sound is taken as the subject and permanence is established as the sign, it is as if it is not established. If permanence is taken as the subject and action is established as the sign, it is also not established, which is a fault. The similarity of establishment is that if sound is taken as the subject and action is established as the sign, then the action of sound is established. Although the action of non-sound is not established, only action is established, so there is no fault. Sound is only established in one aspect of effort-born, and not established in one aspect, but only effort-born is established, so there is no fault, because the previous tenet is established. In the second case, the similarity when the collection generality is taken as the sign is that if the eye consciousness of double moon appearance is taken as the subject and the absence of conceptualization and non-confusion are established as the sign, although the individual absence of conceptualization is established, non-confusion is not established, so the collection of absence of conceptualization and non-confusion is not established. If the collection generality of the three characteristics is taken as the subject and it is established that this alone can represent the sign, then this sign is not established in one aspect of the collection, only in the pervasion, so the nature of the collection is not established is the same, but it is not clear whether the fault of pervasion is the same. In the second case, there are three types of non-establishment in consciousness: doubting the subject, doubting the sign, and non-establishment due to doubting the relationship between the two. The first case has two types, doubting because there is no definite reason is that the meat-eater

When a pot is taken as the subject, even though there is certainty, doubt arises. It is like taking a jewel as the subject when it is uncertain whether it is a jewel or a lamp. Whichever property is established, it is the same. In the second case, doubt arises from the absence of certainty. For example: A pot is the subject, it is impermanent, because it is made by one who is free from desire. Even though there is certainty, doubt arises. For example: When it is uncertain whether it is smoke or steam, the slope with gray matter is the subject, there is fire, because there is smoke. In the third case, there are two: Doubt arises from the absence of certainty. For example: Past virtuous deeds are the subject, they exist, because they are the cause of present happiness. Even though there is certainty, doubt arises. For example: In the middle of the three valleys is the subject, there are peacocks, because the sound of peacocks is heard. The third is unestablished in relation to the proponent, and there are two types: unestablished for the former proponent and unestablished for the latter proponent. In the first case, the Samkhya school asserts that intelligence is the subject, it is mindless, because it is subject to arising and ceasing. In the second case, the Jains assert to the Buddhists that trees are the subject, they are sentient, because they die when their bark is peeled. Here, if death is understood as abandoning life and breath, then the nature of the sign is not established. If viewed from the perspective of tenets, then it is unestablished for the latter proponent, the Buddhist. In short, if the meaning to be expressed as a sign is established on the subject of debate, in the common perception of both the proponent and the opponent, even if the word is not established in the common perception, the property of the subject is established. For example, a Buddhist says to a Vaisheshika: Atoms of the four elements are the subject, they are impermanent, because they have a body. When this is established, for the atoms of the four elements, the word "having a body," the nature of a substance for which not all names have been exhausted, is not accepted by the Vaisheshika, but the meaning of "having a body," that is, tangibility, is established, and thus it becomes a correct reason. If the meaning of the reason is not established, even if the word is established, it will not become a correct argument, just like the two arguments established by the Samkhya and the Jains in front of the Buddhists, as mentioned earlier. If all unestablished arguments are to be summarized, then those that are unestablished in meaning are divided into two, resulting in six; those that are unestablished in consciousness are divided into three, resulting in six, totaling twelve, namely, the property and the subject.
