Similar. When it is necessary to prove through pervasion, property-of-the-subject, and reason, if after understanding the pervasion, property-of-the-subject, and reason, the three aspects are continuously ascertained after the decisive knowledge brought about by inference, then it is a reason for oneself; if after ascertaining on each of the three aspects and forgetting, it becomes a proof for others, which is also similar to the former. For refutation reasons, although there is no certainty that it arises from the mind that apprehends the sign (因持心,rtags 'dzin sems) itself as the sign. But in the end, when it becomes a proof for proving the result from the cause, it seems to be a secret term of logicians that it arises from that proof. Nowadays, the desire to remember the three aspects simultaneously is unexamined, because it is impossible for the conceptualization of apprehending the sign on the basis of the subject of debate and the conceptualization of apprehending the pervasion on the example to arise simultaneously. Therefore, for the reason for oneself, one first remembers the pervasion, and then after remembering the pervasion, one remembers the property-of-the-subject, and thus inference arises. For example, when suddenly seeing smoke, one will ascertain: if there is smoke, then there must be fire; because there is smoke here, therefore there is fire. In the case of others, for those with the property-of-the-subject as the antecedent, one first remembers the property-of-the-subject; for those with the pervasion as the antecedent, one first remembers the pervasion. Because the hearing consciousness that is the cause of these two arises in that order. The fourth point is: Dignāga (ཕྱོགས་གླང་།, ca. 480-540 CE) explained the mind that apprehends the sign as a division of apparent perception, and said that it is distinguished from inference by memory; in the Commentary on Valid Cognition, it is said that the result of the sign and the sign-possessor are the cause of inference; Lha (ལྷས།) said that the nature of the sign is smoke, and the mind that apprehends living beings is said to be the mind that apprehends the sign; Śa (ཤས།) said that the object of the sign is a later arising of perception; Nyi Sbas (ཉི་སྦས།) said that the knowledge of the sign is not an object of things; and in the previously quoted Commentary on the Treasury of Reasoning, it is said: We believe that the nature of smoke and what is made, etc., which are to be posited as signs, give rise to sign apprehension, but we do not believe that it arises from the certainty of the three aspects of the sign. The meaning of all these statements rests on this very method, which seems to have been unseen by others before. In short, the mind that apprehends the sign is the wisdom that apprehends the basis of distinction, and the certainty of the three aspects is the

If one knows that it is the mind of clinging, then this method will become self-liberated. Second, the defining characteristic is, in the "Treasury of Reasoning" it says, "The defining characteristic of a sign is the elimination of others." It is said that when establishing that sound is impermanent, if 'caused' becomes the sign, then which, the own-character or the sound-meaning, is the valid sign? For the conceptualization that grasps 'caused' as the valid sign for establishing that sound is impermanent, 'caused' alone is the valid sign in the face of the sound-meaning and the own-character not being separated, because it does not grasp the sound-meaning as the valid sign, nor does it grasp the own-character as the valid sign, but grasps only 'caused' as the valid sign. When the subsequent conceptualization separates them, the own-character is not the valid sign, because one cannot directly perform affirmation and negation on the own-character. The sound-meaning is the valid sign, because that 'caused' that appeared to the previous conceptualization is the valid sign, and it does not go beyond the scope of the sound-meaning. Therefore, that 'caused' that appears in the conceptualization that grasps 'caused' as the valid sign for establishing that sound is impermanent is itself the elimination of others, so the elimination of others is the valid sign. Third, the detailed classification of the signified is, the scripture says, "That which possesses that characteristic, the divisions of reason become many. Dharmakirti definitely made three from the perspective of combination." Thus, he made five divisions from the perspective of entities and one from the perspective of combination, making six in total. However, if one considers it from the perspective of encompassing all types of reasons, then there are ten divisions, namely, from the perspective of combination, from the perspective of the way of entering, from the perspective of the establisher, from the perspective of the way of establishing, from the perspective of the dharma to be established, from the perspective of relationship, from the perspective of the establishment as a sign, from the perspective of the way of establishing, from the perspective of the opponent, and from the perspective of the way of expression. The first is, from the perspective of combination, it is included in the three reasons of effect, nature, and non-observation. All negative signs can ultimately be included in the reason of non-observation of what is possible to appear, so it can be determined on one example. The two affirmative signs must be determined on separate examples. Regarding this, in the Commentary on Valid Cognition, it says that from the sign of non-observation, the detailed explanation of seeming reasons is explained at the end, so the reasons of effect and nature are mentioned first. In the Ascertainment of Valid Cognition, it says that from the signs of effect and nature, the establishment of the relationship between the sign and the dharma
