And, eliminating contradictions is the contradiction of mutually determining each other. Thus it is said. In the *Tattvanirnaya* it says: If it becomes the second aspect, then it is not, because the concomitance and the counter-concomitance are mutually different. Because those can be expressed even with a single statement, it is said to be a concise statement, not a concise aspect. Thus it is said. In the *Tarkarahasya* it says: The object of inference taken as the basis is what is desired to be known. Among them, what is established is the property of the subject. In its auto-commentary it says: For what is desired to be known, what is established from perception or inference is the first aspect, called the property of the subject. Thus it is said. By the force of the connection between the sign and the probandum, the concomitance and counter-concomitance are determined as existence and non-existence. In its auto-commentary it says: Having determined the connection between the sign and the probandum by means of valid cognition, the probandum following the sign is the concomitance. If the property of the probandum is reversed, the sign is also reversed, this is the aspect of counter-concomitance. These cannot be determined on the object of inference that is desired to be known, so they must be determined on the example. Thus it is said. Third, refuting the argument is, in the *Tarkarahasya* it says: The second aspect and the concomitance, there are no two faults of rejecting the counter-concomitance. Thus it is said, it should be understood from the auto-commentary. Second, how does it become the characteristic of the definition? Just the three aspects can be determined, and they also exist in the self-character of the meaning, so in order to become the knower, it is necessary to determine the three aspects. Just as one does not say that sense consciousness can grasp objects, the word "sign" is also not said to be the knower, but it is spoken of as the knower. Considering this, in the *Pramanaviniscaya* it says: The object of inference and what is similar to it, in existence and non-existence, there is no, it is determination. And, its meaning in the *Tattvanirnaya* says: The determination mentioned at the end, all three aspects must be observed. Thus it is said. Here, refuting the argument includes: refuting the lack of pervasion in determination, refuting the incompatibility with the property of the meaning, and refuting being too extensive, and three. Among the latter five, the second is, the auto-commentary says as follows: Second, the consequence that the apprehension of the sign does not arise from the sign is: before the three aspects are determined, it is not a sign, so the apprehension of the sign that arises from it becomes the apprehension of the sign arising from what is not a sign. If you accept, whatever a thing becomes, that is the cause of the mind of the sign, from that arises that kind of.

If someone asks, does this contradict "wisdom that arises from things and has the characteristic of a valid reason"? We believe that the nature of things presented as reasons, such as smoke and being made, etc., gives rise to attachment to reasons, but we do not believe that it arises from the certainty of the characteristics of reasons, i.e., the establishment of the three modes. Thus it is said. To explain these meanings, in general, there are many different views between China and Tibet regarding the mind that clings to reasons, but in order to explain the intention of this great being as it is, there are four points: definition, example, mode of arising, and combination with scripture. The first point is: before the three modes are established, any decisive knowledge that is regarded as a reason will become the cause of the lineage of the subsequent inference that is its own result, i.e., having a valid reason. The second point is: for the causal reason, such as the decisive knowledge that is certain about smoke, which arises after the direct perception of seeing smoke; for the nature reason, such as the direct perception of grasping sound, if it can bring forth the certainty that sound is made by its own power, then it is like the decisive knowledge that is certain that sound is made, which arises after that direct perception; if it cannot bring it forth by its own power, then it is like the decisive knowledge that grasps being made, which is brought forth by the subsequent inference that understands sound to be made, i.e., like the mind that clings to the reason of establishing sound as impermanent by the reason of being made. For the refutation reason, it is like the latter of the two conceptualizations brought forth by the direct perception of the senses that grasp the object, thinking, "This direction is seen," and "This vase is not seen." The third point is: the decisive knowledge that is certain about smoke brings forth the two conceptualizations that grasp the pervasion that smoke itself exists on the mountain, and the pervasion that is certain about the relationship of fire and smoke arising from it. When the three modes are continuously certain in this way, without relying on the statement of proof, the subsequent inference that knows that fire exists on the mountain will arise. This is in terms of the reason for oneself. For this, the memory that intervenes is none other than the wisdom that establishes the three modes. Furthermore, as an example of the reason, after the certainty of smoke, if the certainty of the three modes on their respective bases is forgotten, then later, when stating the statement of proof, the memory of remembering the three modes arises, and from that the subsequent inference arises. For this, although both the wisdom of establishing the three modes and the memory can be the interval, since both are the same as memory, it is said that memory is the interval. For the nature reason, it is mostly the same.
