That very part of experiencing one's own nature on top of it is just that. Thirdly, if it is consciousness, examine whether or not it is pervasive that self-awareness is manifest in its own nature. Examine whether or not self-awareness and other-awareness are contradictory. Examine whether or not self-awareness has an object, and of these three, the first is: Some ancient people say that consciousness with dual appearances has two parts: the part where its own nature is clear, and the part where it knows other objects. The first is the grasping aspect, so self-awareness is manifest in its own nature. The latter is the grasped aspect, so self-awareness is not manifest in its own nature. Then, for the Vaiśeṣika, in the eyes of the Buddhists, the feeling of happiness is a dharma, it does not know its own nature, because it knows other objects. Therefore, it is reasonable to establish an undesirable consequence for this statement, and the root consciousness that grasps blue is a dharma, it does not know blue, because it does not know its own nature. Therefore, for those who do not accept self-awareness, it is a refuting consequence, but it is not a correct consequence, because that has been promised. If you admit it, then in the Pramāṇavārttika it says, "If the object is not manifest, seeing the meaning will not be well established." And, "Here, if one does not know oneself, how does one know the nature of others?" This is contradictory. In our own system, if it is consciousness, self-awareness is manifest in its own nature is pervasive. To establish this, there are two types of proof: scriptural and logical. First, in the Pramāṇasūtra it says, "Conceptual thought is also considered self-awareness, but it is not for the meaning, because it is conceptual thought." And, in the Pramāṇavārttika it says, "One's own nature is not the meaning of sound, therefore everything is manifest for that." Second, establishing the proof: the root consciousness that grasps blue is self-aware in its own nature, because the aspect that becomes its experience is the nature of the root consciousness that grasps blue. By establishing two ways, self-awareness is mostly established. That is also established, from the sign of later memory, it is established that the root consciousness that grasps blue has an experiencer in its own time, and there is no other experiencing substance, from memory also self-awareness is established. For those who do not have self-experience, stating the refutation is that there is another experiencing substance for happiness etc., because there is an experiencer for that, because there is no self-experience. If you admit it, the consciousness that is simultaneous with oneself is experienced by another substance.

Is that the understanding? Or is the subsequent consciousness experienced by another entity? Having examined this, the refutations stated in the scriptures should be discussed. Secondly, these two are contradictory. If one dharma is the knowledge of other-consciousness, then it is not pervasive of other-consciousness. If one's own nature is self-consciousness, then it is not pervasive of self-consciousness. Therefore, according to the Sautrāntika school, the objects that appear manifestly to both the sense consciousness and mental consciousness have entities other than themselves, so they are manifest object-consciousness, not manifest self-consciousness. According to the Yogācāra school, since the objects that appear manifestly to both do not have entities other than themselves, they assert self-consciousness as manifest. In this way, according to the Yogācāra school, the ascertainment of two kinds of manifest consciousness, and in the *Ālambanaparīkṣā*, the determination of the three conditions for sense-manifestation by taking the Yogācāra's own system as the basis, are not contradictory. In the second chapter on valid cognition and its result, the valid cognition and its result of sense-consciousness are also established as the result of self-consciousness, and all of these converge into one meaning. Thirdly, in the auto-commentary on the *Tattvasaṃgraha*, it is stated that self-consciousness has no object. And in the *Pramāṇavārttika*: "If self is established as the object, the valid cognizer, the valid cognition, and the result abide. This should be applied to all." And: "Since it is definitely simultaneous with the mind, what is experienced at the same time, how can the object be different from that, and become the object to be measured?" These statements say that what is experienced by self-consciousness is the object of self-consciousness. What is the intention behind these statements? Some people, without distinguishing between conventional and ultimate truth, explain that self-consciousness has no object according to the literal meaning, which is unreasonable. Because if self-consciousness has no object in conventional terms, then the apprehended aspect in conventional terms would not be the object to be measured by the apprehender aspect. Some say that even from the ultimate point of view, there is an object, because it is a knowledge that does not deceive the object it enters, because it is a valid cognition. This statement does not understand that the definition of valid cognition (pramāṇa, Sanskrit) as non-deceptive knowledge, and that non-deception also possesses the three characteristics of non-deceptive action, agent, and object, and that it is divided into two types, direct perception and inference, and that all the establishments of self and general characteristics as objects to be measured are all made from the perspective of conventional valid cognition. The crucial meaning is this:
