Refutation of the Examination of Other Schools. There are three points: establishing the tenets of the Sugata. The first point is that the Lokayata (materialists) assert nature as the cause, the Ishvaravadins (theists) assert Ishvara as the cause, the Samkhyas (enumerators) assert Prakriti as the cause, the Vaisheshikas (atomists) and the two Hinayana schools assert atoms as the cause, the Chittamatrins (Mind-Only school) assert all appearances as mind, and those who assert emptiness of inherent existence consider all dharmas to be free from elaboration in ultimate truth, but in conventional truth, they are the same as those who assert reality, or they are the same as worldly conventions. The second point is that asserting nature as the cause is not reasonable, because it is harmed by the reasoning that prevents arising from no cause. Asserting Ishvara and Prakriti as the cause is also not reasonable, because it is harmed by the reasoning that prevents arising from permanence. The third point is divided into two points: identifying the intention and how the teacher ascertained it. The first point is that when the Sugata enters into conventional truth, he accepts atoms, and there are two tenets of the Vaibhashika and Sautrantika schools on this. When entering the suchness of conventional truth, he accepts the Chittamatra school, and there are two types of it: appearance-true and appearance-false. When entering the suchness of ultimate truth, he establishes all dharmas as being free from elaboration. The second point is that among the four Buddhist tenets, which one did the teacher ascertain? On this, there are two types: meaning-consciousness and appearance-consciousness. When accepting the first, he refutes the Vaibhashika school's view that sense consciousness directly apprehends external objects without any appearance, and accepts the Sautrantika school's view that on the basis of the aggregation of three conditions in the previous moment, sense consciousness arises with the appearance of the object in the second moment, and thus knows the external object. The teacher himself said, "If I engage in the examination of external objects, I will rely on the Sautrantika perspective." It is said that he said so. Second, when accepting appearance-consciousness, he refutes the appearance-true school's view that the coarse appearance that appears to sense consciousness is truly established, and accepts appearance-less. Therefore, he said, "For objects and consciousness, is there a coarse appearance or not?" etc.

Here, concerning the two, Sautrāntika and Cittamātra, if the aforementioned debate is understood from the perspective of Sautrāntika, then the first argument is not established, because according to Sautrāntika, the external object that produces appearance itself is considered the object of apprehension. If it is understood from the perspective of Cittamātra, then that is what is desired, because according to Cittamātra, the object and subject, as objects of apprehension, are not established. Considering this meaning, in the Treatise on Reasoning it is said: "As long as external objects are accepted, then the cause is called the object of apprehension. When knowledge enters the mind, object and subject are not established." The analysis of objects, the first part, has been explained. Next, concerning the mind as the knower, there are three aspects: definition, classification and categorization, and determining the meaning of these. The first part is: the definition of mind is cognition, and the definition of knowledge is clarity and experience. The second part is: from the perspective of the object, there are two types: conceptual and non-conceptual. From the perspective of nature, there are two types: illusory and non-illusory knowledge. From the perspective of the way of entering, there are three types: not entering the object like a cut tree, entering, and having entered. The third part includes two aspects: refutation and establishment. The first aspect includes two parts: stating the view and refuting the view. The first aspect is: former scholars, such as Phya-pa Chenpo, etc., say that all non-valid cognitions are included in five: presumption, unclear appearance, decisive cognition, mistaken cognition, and doubt. Each of these five has two aspects: definition and classification. The first, concerning presumption, the definition is: a cognition that newly ascertains the truth of a hidden object without relying on a sign. The classifications are: causeless presumption, inverted reason presumption, and uncertain reason presumption. The first, for example, is the thought that there is water in the old well of the ancestors. The second, for example, is the cognition that relies on uncertain and unestablished reasons to definitively ascertain that the object to be proven is true. The third, for example, is the cognition that, although the three modes are uncertain, infers from the reason of being made that sound is impermanent. The definition of unclear appearance is: a cognition that appears with the characteristics of the object itself without contradicting the imputation of the opposite side. The classifications are: unclear image of the object, inattentive mind, and appearance that is seized by the cause of illusion.
