The immediately preceding condition also has three aspects: definition, the meaning of the word being explained, and the elimination of doubts about the example. The first is: Any consciousness that, without being interrupted by other dharmas, primarily and directly generates the consciousness that becomes its own result is the immediately preceding condition. The second is: Because the cause and effect are the same in terms of knowing, it is "immediately preceding"; because it is not interrupted by other dharmas, it generates immediately, hence it is a condition. The third is: Then, what is the immediately preceding condition for the arising mind that arises from the five states of mindlessness, such as the two absorptions? Some believe that it is the initial entering mind itself, and some believe that it is the alaya-consciousness itself, which is not reasonable, because there may be a long time interval between the initial entering mind and the result, and the theory of alaya-consciousness is valid in the Vijnanavada school, but not in the Sautrantika school. Therefore, in those states, there is a non-manifest consciousness, so it is the immediately preceding condition of the arising mind. Second, the dominant condition has three aspects: definition, example, and meaning of the word. The first is: The factor that primarily and directly generates the ability to hold the respective objects of the sense consciousness that has become its own result, which is the definition of the dominant condition of the sense consciousness that has become its own result. The second is: It has been explained before. The third is: Because by its power, it can autonomously generate the ability to hold objects on top of the sense consciousness, it is the dominant condition. Third, the objective condition has two aspects: definition and example. The first is: The external object that primarily and directly generates the aspect of the object on top of that consciousness is the definition of the objective condition of that consciousness. According to the Vijnanavada school, the word "power" should be substituted for "external object." The second is: The Abhidharma masters say, "The object is all dharmas." Therefore, they believe that all dharmas are objects, but here it must be established as the external object that generates the aspect, so it is the five objects such as form. However, the difference between the apprehended object and these two is: From the point of view of merely generating the aspect, it is the objective condition, and from the point of view of generating a similar aspect from itself, it is the apprehended object. Therefore, the apprehended object pervades the objective condition, but the objective condition of that consciousness does not pervade the apprehended object of that consciousness. Second

There are three types of mental direct perception: the determination of the entity, the establishment of the nature, and the refutation of arguments. The first aspect has three parts: definition, classification, and examination of the three causes. First, it is the consciousness that arises directly from the immediately preceding cause, the mental faculty, and has an object to be grasped, which is its own unique and uncommon dominant condition. Second, there are five types, such as the visual mental direct perception. In the third aspect, the dominant condition is: when the root consciousness arises in the continuum, the five consciousnesses of the senses are the uncommon dominant condition of mental direct perception. If there is mental direct perception, it must be meaning-perceiving mental direct perception. Because the consciousness of the mind cannot act as the uncommon dominant condition of meaning-perceiving mental direct perception, because its immediately preceding cause and dominant condition are the same entity. The immediately preceding cause is the root consciousness itself, as explained in both the Commentary on Valid Cognition and the Determination of Valid Cognition. The immediately preceding cause is the dominant condition mentioned above, which is established as the immediately preceding cause from the aspect of generating the clear and aware experience of mental direct perception. As it says in the Determination of Valid Cognition: "From the immediately preceding cause of the root consciousness, it arises." And in the Commentary on Valid Cognition: "Therefore, the consciousness of the senses has the characteristic of arising from the immediately preceding cause." The objective condition is: the objective condition of the first moment of sense direct perception is not the objective condition of the first moment of mental direct perception, because it has already ceased at the time of the immediately preceding cause of mental direct perception. Because the scripture says: "Because the moment itself has ceased, seeing the meaning does not exist." Therefore, the second moment of the same type is the object to be grasped of both the first moment of mental direct perception and the second moment of sense direct perception. Second, in terms of establishing the nature, there are three aspects: the rationale for arising, establishing it as valid cognition, and examining the state of arising. First, after the five sense direct perceptions have ceased, do the five mental direct perceptions arise simultaneously or not? If they do not arise, then the difference in the effect cannot be established from the difference in the cause. If they arise, then it will lead to one person becoming multiple continuums. If they arise in this way, there will be no fault of leading to one person becoming multiple continuums, because the continuum of self-awareness internally unifies and holds it together. Otherwise, when the five sense consciousnesses and conceptual thought arise simultaneously, one person will become multiple
