The definition of negation divided by the means of establishing is the definition of negation. It is to understand by distinguishing what is to be negated and what is to be established by wisdom, and only on the distinction. This and non-affirming negation, because they are to be represented by one definition. Secondly, there are three: negation, establishment, and abandonment. The first is: Earlier scholars such as Phya pa said that the definitions of direct cognition and indirect cognition are, respectively, cutting off superimposition through the appearance of the aspect of the object itself, and cutting off superimposition through the appearance of the aspect of another object. This is unreasonable, because all inference would become implicit cognition. The second is: inference based on the establishing sign, or the establishing that is eliminated by the certainty led by direct perception, or the establishing of non-affirming negation. For example, when the certainty led by the direct perception of grasping sound, which is free from the cause of error in grasping sound as permanent, determines that sound is impermanent, it is said that sound is established as impermanent. If there is a cause of error, then later, when it is determined from the sign that sound is impermanent, it is said that sound is established as impermanent. Inference based on the negating sign, or establishing negation by the certainty led by direct perception. For example, when the opponent, a scholar, uses the certainty led by the self-awareness direct perception experienced by the pure grasping sense direct perception to determine that there is no pot in a certain place, it is said to be pure of pot. When the opponent, a fool, determines from the sign that the pot is not perceived by valid cognition that there is no pot in a certain place, it is said to be pure of pot. The third is: if there is no direct perception or implicit cognition, then the teacher says in some parts of the text, "Understanding is through the meaning understood implicitly," which contradicts this. Answer: There is no fault, because this refers to the sudden arising of inference from the action of direct perception or the habituation of the three modes. The excellent explanation of the examination of definitions, that is, the eighth chapter of excellent explanation, is finished. Secondly, there are two aspects of the individual bases of definitions: direct perception and inference. First, there are three: correct direct perception, the opposite of apparent direct perception, valid cognition and its result. First, there are three: definition, the divisions of what is to be explained, and the individual bases of definitions. First, there are two: negation and establishment. The first is: Phya pa etc. dir

Regarding the distinction between direct perception (na sum) and direct valid cognition (mngon sum tshad ma), firstly, the definition of the former is: knowledge that is free from conceptualization and non-erroneous. The definition of the latter is: cutting off superimposition through the power of experience on a matter not previously understood. It is not reasonable to say this, because dividing into two is not explained in the treatises, and there is no determination for what has not been understood before, and cutting off superimposition is impossible in the self-aspect of direct perception. Secondly, there are two aspects: the actual definition and understanding its meaning. The first aspect is: if from the perspective of eliminating wrong conceptualizations, it is knowledge that is free from conceptualization and non-erroneous; if from the perspective of eliminating dissimilar types, it is non-erroneous knowledge. This is the definition of direct perception, and it is also the definition of direct valid cognition. Because in the Pramāṇaviniścaya (rnam nges) it says: "Direct perception is free from conceptualization and non-erroneous." If from the perspective that it is a valid cognition (tshad ma), then no other definition has been given for direct valid cognition. The second aspect has three parts: understanding the meaning of being free from conceptualization, understanding the meaning of being non-erroneous, and understanding the meaning of both. First, the conceptualization to be abandoned is the conceptualization that grasps sound and meaning. In the Pramāṇasamuccaya (rnam 'grel) it says: "Whatever knowledge grasps sound and meaning, that is conceptualization for that." And in the Pramāṇaviniścaya (rnam nges) it says: "Conceptualization is knowledge that is liable to be mixed with expression." So, what is the necessity of mentioning "liable"? Some Indians say that it is for the purpose of including the conceptualization in the mindstream of children who are not proficient in language, because the mind that grasps sound and meaning does not pervade those conceptualizations. This statement is also the same for the other case, because the mind that grasps "liable" does not pervade the conceptualization in the mindstream of old people who are proficient in language. If it is said that there is no fault in establishing it on the category of grasping "liable", then it is also the same for the former, because it is established on the category of grasping "mixed". In short, the definition of the conceptualization to be abandoned shown here, the mind that grasps the mixture of sound and meaning, the mind that grasps the possibility of mixing sound and meaning, the mind that grasps sound and meaning, and the clinging mind that grasps the general meaning, should be understood as having no difference. The way to be free from this is: not possessing the definition of conceptualization in its own aspect, its meaning being that when the self-characteristic is taken as the basis, the previous definition is incomplete. Secondly, some, like the Vijñānavādins, consider it to be non-deceptive.
