It has been shown that there are two types of determination: self-determination and other-determination. All the differences between self-determination and other-determination that will be explained below depend on this. Second, the definition of self-determining valid cognition (pramāṇa): Whatever is a valid cognition, it generates certainty about its object of measurement by its own power, so that through self-experiencing, self-aware direct perception, it does not deceive itself about its object of measurement, and it generates certainty by its own power. The definition of other-determining valid cognition (pramāṇa): Whatever is a valid cognition, it cannot generate certainty about its object of measurement by its own power, so that through self-experiencing, self-aware direct perception, it does not deceive itself about its object of measurement, but it cannot generate certainty by its own power and must generate it by the power of another valid cognition. As an example, all inferences (anumāna) are only self-determining valid cognition, because if a sign with the three aspects does not determine the object to be proven, it cannot be an inference; and if it does determine it, it can generate certainty about the object to be proven by its own power. Considering this, Lha Shak Chok in the three commentaries explained inference as only self-determining. Among the four types of direct perception (pratyakṣa), some say that yogic direct perception is only self-determining valid cognition, because the "Great Wisdom Sutra" says, "It determines all aspects." This is not reasonable, because the "Great Wisdom" here refers to the fact that direct perception does not err in seeing things, and therefore can generate certainty by its own power, and does not refer to yogic direct perception alone, because this is not the meaning of the context, and because there is no certainty in the minds of Buddhas and noble ones, so it is impossible for yogic direct perception in their minds to generate certainty. Therefore, it is possible that yogic direct perception is neither self-determining nor other-determining, and the yogic direct perception of noble ones with conceptual thought is only self-determining. All self-aware direct perceptions are only self-determining, because they can generate certainty about the main object of their cognition by their own power. However, not all objects of cognition are self-determining valid cognition, because the self-aware direct perception in the mind of a person whose mind is corrupted by the habit of clinging to permanence cannot generate certainty by its own power at the moment of cognition. Also, not all objects of cognition are necessarily self-determined, because the inferential experience in the mind of a tirthika

Because self-cognizant perception cannot, by its own power, lead to the term of subsequent inference. And because mental perception is impermanent, it cannot immediately lead to ascertainment. Therefore, it is only the valid cognition of other-cognition. This is in terms of self-cognition and mental perception both being considered valid cognitions in name only. Regarding sense perception, Dharmakīrti considers it to be self-cognizant because it is the perception of functional appearance and the perception of habituation. The perception that engages is self-cognizant if there is no cause of error, and other-cognizant if there is. They consider there to be three types of this. In the *Treasury of Reasoning*, the perception of functional appearance and the perception of habituation are distinguished. On top of these two, which are self-cognizant and have causes of error, the first-time perceiver and the inattentive are added, and these are considered to be valid cognitions of other-cognition. Among these, the perception of functional appearance is like the sense perception that apprehends fire as it appears to be performing the function of burning and cooking. The perception of habituation is like the perception that grasps subtle details due to long-term habituation with an object. The first-time perceiver is the new seeing of something whose kind has not been seen before, like the perception of seeing a yak for the first time. The inattentive is like the sense perception that apprehends objects in a state where conceptual thought is withdrawn inward. The one with causes of error is one that actually arises from the three conditions, but because some internal or external causes of error obstruct it, it cannot lead to ascertainment by its own power. Dividing this, there are three: appearance is determined by itself, but truth is determined by another; the general is determined by itself, but the particular is determined by another; and appearance itself is also determined by another. Each of these is then established from four aspects. An example of the first is: in reality it is fire, but when one is hesitating whether it is fire or not, it is like the sense perception that apprehends a distant red blaze. That red blaze is the color of fire, and in that respect it is valid cognition, because it is a non-conceptual, non-erroneous awareness. This is other-cognizant, because due to the distance of the place, and causes of error such as illusory fire and the light of jewels, it cannot lead to ascertainment by its own power. The valid cognition that ascertains is the power of later going to the fire and seeing the function of burning and cooking, or the appear
