Since this is a category of names, both can also be used as a basis for distinction. Here, because there are two objects to be measured, it is said "two valid cognitions," which are direct perception and inference. In the Pramāṇavārttika, it says, "Correct knowledge has two aspects, namely direct perception and inference." This is because it explains correct knowledge as the basis for distinction. The second is: direct perception and inference. The third is: In the way of understanding the object to be measured, there are two ways, namely the way of understanding based on experience and the way of understanding based on signs; or there are two ways, namely the way of understanding through one's own nature and the way of understanding through the nature of others. The fourth is: If asked which of the four differences do direct perception and inference belong to? Jñānaśrī says: It is the difference of negating oneness, because direct perception is the knowledge of the part of experience, so it is a real object; and inference is the part of the defilement of conceptual thought, so the object of apprehension is not a real object, therefore the inference that measures it is also not a real object. It is unreasonable to say this, because both are real objects. Moreover, the object of apprehension of inference is an illusion in the part that is not a real object, and the illusion itself is a real object. Some people think that relying on one object is the same, which is also unreasonable, because conceptual thought and non-conceptual thought are not the same object. Some people think that relying on different objects is different in nature, which is also unreasonable, because general inference is different in nature from direct perception, and special self-awareness direct perception is different in nature from direct perception, then this would lead to it not being knowledge. Therefore, direct perception and inference are one in the nature of mind, because inference itself has the nature of being one with direct perception. Direct perception and inference are established based on the object, for example, the inference that knows there is fire on the mountain, in terms of the object, is the collection of the mountain and fire, so it is inference; in terms of its own nature, it is direct perception. If it is said that that inference is not inference in terms of the object, because it is direct perception in terms of the object. Also, if the special self-awareness direct perception is one in nature with direct perception, if it must be one in nature with direct perception, then, that dharma, becomes different in nature from direct perception, because it is different in nature from sense direct perception. If you say so, the first fault is not there, because it is said that it is different depending on the object.

meaning of. That inference, when self-cognizance manifests in inference, it is because inference does not rely on the object to establish self-cognizance as manifest. Because at that time, that inference is not established as the object of inference. The second fault is also absent, if the difference is that flesh and essence are one, then it must also be that the essence of wood is one, but if flesh and essence are different, then it is not necessary that the essence of wood is different. Fifth, some of our own schools hold that valid cognition is definitely threefold: direct perception, inference, and scripture. Master Chandrakirti added the valid cognition of analogy and measurement on top of that, making it four. Some outsiders hold that there are many more, such as understanding through meaning and the valid cognition of non-things. Here, what is the reason for the determination of two types of valid cognition: direct perception and inference? The establishment of the numerical determination of one's own system is: the object of entry is the unique self-characteristic, and the object to be measured is determined to be two by the mode of understanding. Therefore, the valid cognition that understands is also numerically determined to be two. To refute the numerical determination of other systems, in short: it is said that the wisdom that realizes that color is impermanent and the wisdom of recognizing differences by seeing are valid cognitions, refuting the misconceptions of the majority side that considers them to be three aggregates. In the Commentary on Valid Cognition, it is also said that on top of that, the Carvakas' view that valid cognition is only direct perception is also refuted as a misconception of the minority side. Sixth, generally, if names are divided from the perspective of what is expressed, there are two types: those that depend on the name, such as "Devadatta," and those that depend on the category, such as "tree." If divided from the perspective of essence, there are two types: names that are explained with reason, such as "omniscient," and names that are applied with reason, such as "pot." In this case, there are three types: explanation and application are contradictory, non-contradictory, and contradictory and non-contradictory. The first is like "bird pecking sesame seeds" and "shepherdess herding sheep." The second is like "omniscient" and "eye consciousness." The third is the third case of contradiction and non-contradiction. For example, in the case of "sea-born," application refers to the lotus, and explanation is that it is called "sea-born" because it is born from the sea. Among these three, for the lotus born from the sea, both explanation and application
