Of the three, the first is: Knowing things as they exist, knowing existence as existence, and non-existence as non-existence, this is non-deception. The second is: Because things have their own characteristics, if one engages with them, one is not deceived in being able to accomplish things; because things do not have their own characteristics, if one deviates from them, one is not deceived in being unable to accomplish things. The third is: If one enters into self-characteristics, one is not deceived in obtaining those self-characteristics; because things do not have self-characteristics, if one deviates from them, one is not deceived in the non-existence of those self-characteristics. Therefore, all things possess the non-deception of the object as taught here, because when they themselves become the object of measurement, they abide in being able to accomplish things. Decisive cognition and doubt may possess the non-deception of action, because they enter into self-characteristics, so it is possible to obtain self-characteristics. However, the non-deception of the agent is not complete, because if it were, then the manner of apprehension must be non-erroneous, but decisive cognition apprehends the objects of previous and subsequent valid cognitions as one, so the manner of apprehension is erroneous. Therefore, the non-deception here cannot be established solely by the non-deception of the object and the non-deception of the action, because if it is to be the non-deception here, it must possess three qualities. The third is: The definition of valid cognition is perfected by mere non-deceptive cognition, because the non-deception here must possess three qualities, so the non-deception of the agent possesses the meaning of new realization. Therefore, there is no need to add the word "new," because it has no distinction and has the fault of repetition. Therefore, in the Pramāṇavārttika-svārthānumāna it says: "Because when these completely ascertain things and act, there is no deception in accomplishing things." Here it also says: "Valid cognition is non-deceptive knowledge." It also says: "In thought, because it is non-deceptive, even if it is mistaken, it is still valid cognition." It also says: "Because it is non-deceptive, it is valid cognition." It also says: "Whatever is non-deceptive, that is meditative direct perception, considered as valid cognition." It also says: "Valid cognition is a negation, because it is deceptive, it is also so in meaning." And so on, the treatises of Pramāṇavārttika establish whether or not something is valid cognition by means of possessing all non-deceptions, and the addition of the word "new" is not seen, and in the root verses and commentary of the Tshad ma rigs gter, only this is taught, and some of the earlier scholars who followed it also composed in this way.
