Each of the three flawed definitions has two aspects: definition and classification. Definition of the flaw of non-pervasion: What definition does not hold true for one aspect of the defined object? For example, the definition of a cow is stated as having mixed hair, etc. Definition of the flaw of over-pervasion: What definition pervades the defined object and includes what is not intended to be expressed? For example, the definition of a cow is stated as having a head. Definition of the flaw of impossibility: What definition, for what is intended to be expressed, does not hold true as it should be stated? There are two classifications: impossible due to self-contradiction, and impossible for what is intended to be expressed even if not self-contradictory. The first case has four: stating its own term, stating what is qualified by the term, stating another term, and stating what is qualified by the term. The second case has three: impossible due to different entities, impossible due to no self-contradiction, and impossible due to no difference in meaning. In the first case, taking material things as examples: different substances, for example, defining a horse as a cow but stating the characteristics of mixed hair, etc.; different characteristics, for example, stating the definition of a moment. Taking non-material things as examples, defining a generality as non-material, but stating what is held by a deluded sense consciousness. For both, defining knowable as non-affirming negation, but stating that it cannot be made an object of consciousness. The second case is stating the nature of the basis as the definition, for example, defining having mixed hair, etc., as a cow, but stating having mixed hair, etc. The same explanation applies to non-material things and both. The third case is stating the definition by making its own defined object the object of definition, for example, defining a cow as a cow, but stating having mixed hair, etc., and the same explanation applies to the other two cases. The third is refuting the argument: If these flaws of definition are considered to be stated on the defined object, then the definition of a cow as stating a variegated tail will not become non-pervasive, because if stated on a white cow, there will be no flaw, and if stated on a black dwarf cow, it will become impossible. If it is considered not stated, then all the flaws of the defined object will be equally unreasonable. Answer: Even if all the flaws are considered to be stated, there will be no previous flaw, because the white cow is taken as the defined object, and it is defined only as a cow.

Because the gathering of variegated colors and the like cannot be all-pervasive. Secondly, regarding what is to be signified, there are also three aspects. First, refuting other systems: Some people consider the name and the signified meaning to be the same entity, which is unreasonable. This is because the sense consciousness that sees the characteristic, if it is made the distinction of the signified name, then seeing becomes conceptual. Some people also consider the term to be the basis of the signified, which is also unreasonable. This is because at the time of designation, it is designated by making the characteristic the reason, and later, after seeing the characteristic, it is said that one engages in the term only after remembering the designation. Secondly, the self-system is the characteristic of the signified, the establishment of sound and intelligence with reason. The term "with reason" means that it is named with reason, like having a bloated stomach. Sound is the sound of expressing terms, and intelligence is the definitive knowledge that ascertains it. Wherever it is established is its own characteristic, like a vase that does not distinguish between sound and meaning. Thirdly, refuting disputes: If the name and the signified are not the same entity, then it contradicts being a sign of nature. If you ask this, there is no fault, because by holding it as one with the mind of eliminating others, and then separating the differences separately under it, and thus establishing the essence as one, and applying the sign of nature, it is established without being deceived by the marks of all terms. Thirdly, there are two bases for names: characteristics and distinctions. The first is the basis for characteristics. Some Tibetans think that names and signified are faultless pairs of bases, because they first identify the basis with characteristics, and then through that characteristic, they do not understand the meaning that the signified needs to be newly established for that name base. Secondly, the distinctions are: the name base with characteristics, such as grasping white spots as the name base of a cow, and the applied one, which becomes the basis for calculating merits and demerits, such as grasping a horse as the name base of a cow. Thirdly, there are two classifications for each of the three dharmas: how to represent them and the classification of mutual certainty. First, there are six ways to represent being self-exclusive, and six ways to represent not being other-exclusive. The first is: taking the gathering of variegated colors and the like as the basis of the name, and then representing it as a characteristic, generally representing it as a characteristic, that is, establishing the meaning of cutting off the real contradiction, and also representing it as the characteristic of the name base, that is, the characteristic of a cow, in detail.
