The meaning of each object to be defined is determined. Firstly, there are three aspects: the general nature of name, sign, and object to be defined; the specific nature of valid cognition must be determined; and the meaning indicated by the nature is determined. Firstly, there are three aspects: establishing that knowable things are pervaded by three characteristics; the nature of the three pervasive characteristics must be determined; and the individual distinctions of the three characteristics. The first is that all knowable things are pervaded by three aspects—nature, sign, and object to be defined—which is established by the power of self-awareness. When any aspect of a knowable thing appears in the mind, it has a characteristic that is different from others, and it can be fixated upon by unerring verbal cognition, and it also appears as having a basis. Paṇḍita said, "The single word lakṣaṇa (Sanskrit Devanagari: lakṣaṇa, Sanskrit Romanization: lakṣaṇa, meaning: characteristic) is sometimes translated by translators as 'basis' and sometimes as 'sign,' so these two have the same meaning. Nowadays, the combination of name, sign, and object to be defined is not a term of great treatises, otherwise, there would also be a need for three aspects: knowable, knower, and basis of knowledge; expressible, expressing, and basis of expression, and so on." This needs to be distinguished: in general, nature has two aspects: that which takes the sign as the nature, and that which takes the signifier as the nature. The latter has two aspects: the nature of conditioned phenomena, such as impermanence, which establishes the entity, and the nature of impermanence, such as momentariness, which distinguishes it from what it is not. In the first case, the sign and the object to be defined have the same meaning, because the nature of the truth of suffering, such as impermanence, must also signify the aggregates of appropriation, such as the form aggregate. With this in mind, in the Abhidharma and the Root Wisdom, the sign and the object to be defined are said to have the same meaning. According to the latter, the sign and the object to be defined do not have the same meaning, because the nature of valid cognition is said to be non-deceptive knowledge, which cannot signify any single object, whether it is direct perception or inference. Those who combine name, sign, and object to be defined are referring to this, and this is explained in the treatises of reasoning. In the Compendium on Valid Cognition, the five characteristics of establishing meaning for others are mentioned, and in the Commentary on Valid Cognition, it is said that by cutting off the three faults of non-pervasion, over-pervasion, and impossibility, the nature becomes completely pure.

At that time, if there is no difference between the signified and the name-basis, then the five dharmas could also refute the three faults on the aggregates of sound and impermanence, because of that reason. If it is not a term of the great sutra tradition, in the Ornament for Clear Realization it says: Buddhas for the sake of benefiting sentient beings, the name-basis, and also the nature, are correctly explained by distinguishing them. How is this saying to be understood? For this, also, should we refute with, for the sake of benefiting sentient beings, the knowable basis, etc.? Therefore, think well and then speak. Secondly, among the three: nature, signified, and name-basis, the first has three: refuting the assertion that nature does not need nature, establishing the needed nature, and the skillful differentiation of what is to be eliminated. The first is that some say that nature does not need another nature, because it is a different entity of meaning, and if it is needed, it will become infinite. Others say that nature also has two aspects: the meaning of nature and the term. In terms of meaning, it does not need another nature, but the meaning is established as the name-basis, and the nature that is expressed in the term of nature is established, and that is a substance, but the reason is not established. Some say that it is necessary in meaning, but there is no fault, just as the nature of the second term, the term of a cow, needs to include a hump, etc. In this way, the term of nature is infinite, for example, like a reason. To this, the first is not reasonable, nature needs nature, but nature will not become infinite, because it ends in the third combination. The latter is also not reasonable, if the cause of the establishment is not certain, then is the result of the establishment certain or uncertain? If it is certain, then there is no need for nature, because the signified can be understood without nature. If it is uncertain, then it is impossible for the fundamental nature to be certain, because the latter of infinite nature is impossible to be certain. Therefore, the self-tradition is that the wise establish the term by merely seeing the reason and the meaning of nature, and for the foolish, the term is established by establishing those natures as signs, and for the very foolish, the difference in meaning between a cow and a hiding place, the flesh piled up on the neck, the skin hanging on the throat, etc., may need to connect the meaning of the words. Even saying that much is not understood, that is the establishment of the term.
