If it is another substance, it is because the reasoning for refuting the Vaiśeṣikas' acceptance of the general appearing as another substance is the same. Third, refuting other relationships besides that is: This (treatise) refutes connection and aggregation, difference and that which possesses difference, the agent and contact, etc., which are accepted as relationships. Thus, etc., should be understood in the context of the meaning of the text. Second, establishing relationship in the mind has two aspects: how the mind connects, and the establishment of the nature of the relationship as it is connected. The first is: As explained above, although the relationship of one self is not established in reality by reasoning, it is established in the mind. In reality, for one pot itself, the conceptual thought that distinguishes differences, not being bloated, not being momentary, not being produced by a cause, the three, by means of distinguishing, the pot, impermanence, and the opposite of being made, the three are distinguished separately. The conceptual thought that gathers into one, this pot is impermanent, because it is made. Thus, for the object held as one, it is established as a relationship of one self. Moreover, conceptual thought does not arbitrarily distinguish and gather without reason. Rather, just as conceptual thought imputes the opposite from different opposites, it also exists in reality, and distinguishes and gathers as it is commonly known in the world. Therefore, the object of entry will become established as its own characteristic. Whatever possesses name and meaning, mutually, is the seed of this difference. Thus it is said, and how the world commonly knows, upon that, similarly, it relies only on that. Thus, etc., are said. Similarly, by the reasoning explained earlier, the relationship of that arising is not established in reality, but it is established in the mind. For the previous fire and the present smoke, with the non-observation of the three times, etc., brought forth by direct perception, this present smoke is born from that previous fire. Thus, for the object of connection, it is established as the relationship of that arising. In the Examination of Relationships it says: From direct perception, non-observation, etc., the objects of experience of cause and effect, like the meaning of relationship, the true meaning, are the reversed conceptual thoughts that can show. Thus it is said, and in the Determination of Reasoning it says: In the ultimate, for what exists, there are no objects of dharma and possessor of dharma, because these relationships are merely fabricated by the mind. Thus it is said. Second, there are three: Relat

The definition, meaning, and classification of relation. First, any phenomenon that, in the correct cognition of eliminating others without reversing, does not abandon other phenomena. Second, the corresponding word for relation is bandha, and sambandha means to bind completely, and pratibandha means to bind separately. Therefore, from the perspective of eliminating others, two phenomena are bound without separation, hence it is a relation. Third, it is divided into two: the actual classification, and the determination of the basis upon which the relation exists. The first has five points: the basis of classification, the entity of classification, the reason for classifying, the meaning of how it is classified, and the definite number of how many it is classified into. First, it is merely relation. Second, there are two types of relation: self-one relation and other-born relation. The definitions in order are: any phenomenon that, from the perspective of elimination, does not abandon other phenomena by the power of the same nature; and any phenomenon that, from the perspective of elimination, does not abandon other phenomena by the power of being born from it. Third, by the power of having both the same nature and being born from it. Fourth, in relation to each basis, the entity is one, for example, smoke, in relation to its own generality, is a self-one relation; in relation to its own cause, it is an other-born relation. In relation to one basis, the entity is different, because if a phenomenon is a self-one relation, then it contradicts being an other-born relation to it. Fifth, the number of relations is definitely two, because all knowable things are included in two: same entity and different entity. Among them, those with the same entity have a relation, which is the self-one relation, and those with different entities have a relation, which is the other-born relation. Second, some say that because non-things do not have their own entity, relations cannot be established, and relations are only established for things. This is not reasonable, because ultimate relations cannot be established for either, but relations established through conceptual thought can be established even for non-things. As it says in the 'Examination of Relations': 'Relations made by thought, what can prevent them even for non-existent things?' Therefore (relations can be established). Some say that relations can only be established for substances, and not for types, which is also refuted by the previous reason. Some say that other-born relations cannot be established for moments, because it does not have the function of benefiting it. As it says in the sutra: 'Conditioned things'
